PlayStation has faced a particularly tough year, leaving God of War Laufey in an incredibly difficult position once February 2027 rolls around. As the next exclusive that Sony has in the pipeline for the PS5, God of War Laufey not only has to demonstrate that a God of War game without Kratos as the protagonist can work, but it also has to pull the entire PlayStation brand out of its slump.
Sony’s handling of the PlayStation brand throughout this console generation has been rocky in general, but this year saw the company reach the apex of its strange decision-making. Between Sony ending physical games in a few years, a slow output of major exclusives, the insistence on trying to make live-service projects happen, igniting an online uproar over ending new Destiny 2 content, and parting ways with Hideo Kojima, the company is in need of a major win. Now, the big question is whether God of War Laufey will be enough to bring Sony that much-needed victory.
God of War Laufey Is a Turning Point for Sony and PlayStation
Right now, the future of PlayStation looks bleak. Even though 2026 PS5 exclusives like Saros were good, the game was simply too niche to be a massive success. Sony was banking on Marvel’s Wolverine being a huge hit, and while it sold well, the online discourse and controversies surrounding the game left a lot of gamers with a bad taste. Beyond that, the entire console generation has left much to be desired. As a longtime hardcore PlayStation fan, this hurts to say, but this era has been a disappointment when it comes to the exclusive lineup.
Put the consoles in the correct order.
Games like Astro Bot and Ghost of Yotei have been a blast, but there simply hasn’t been enough to make a lot of players feel like spending money on a PS5 has been worth it. Sony’s baffling determination to bring live-service projects into the fold has wasted a lot of time that could have been spent on long-awaited sequels or brand-new single-player IP. Instead, the list of canceled Sony live-service games has continued to grow, and even studios like Bluepoint Games have been shut down because of it.
Sony Needs to Get Back on Track ASAP
As it stands, the only console exclusives that Sony has in the pipeline for 2027 are Until Dawn 2 and God of War Laufey. I’m a huge fan of the first Until Dawn game, but it’s a more niche style of game and doesn’t have the same level of deep admiration that the God of War franchise has. That leaves the rest of the 2027 game release calendar a barren wasteland for the PS5.
God of War Laufey not only has to demonstrate that a God of War game without Kratos as the protagonist can work, but it also has to pull the entire PlayStation brand out of its slump.
Sure, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is peaking across the horizon, but Naughty Dog has kept incredibly tight-lipped about when the game will come out. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet release date rumors have claimed that a 2027 launch window is possible. That would be great if true, but not even a studio as big as Naughty Dog is safe from delays. As long as Naughty Dog stays secretive about Intergalactic’s release target, anything said about a 2027 launch is purely speculation.
If Sony Wants Gamers to Remain Loyal in PlayStation’s Next-Gen Era, God of War Laufey Has to Be Great, Not Good
God of War Laufey is one of the main games I’m currently looking forward to the most. However, after Marvel’s Wolverine‘s divisive qualities, Santa Monica Studio has the added pressure of needing to bring players a game that leaves them in awe. The reason that PlayStation has been so beloved is because of a legacy defined by stellar single-player games. Without incredible games like Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, and Ghost of Tsushima, Sony and PlayStation simply wouldn’t be what it is today, and that’s just the mere tip of the iceberg.
God of War Laufey Arrives at a Crucial Time in This Current Console Generation
- The PS5 is anticipated to be in its last years.
- Reports and rumors claim that the PS6 could arrive as soon as 2027.
- A 2028 release date is more likely, especially with that being the year Sony plans to end physical disc production.
- The next-gen console has been rumored to cost over $1,000.
After such a lukewarm console generation, it’s going to be incredibly difficult for Sony to convince gamers to spend over $1,000 on a new console after its predecessor lacked an extensive list of exclusives. Granted, the price of the PS6 hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but the rising RAM costs make such an eye-watering price feel inevitable. Whether God of War Laufey turns out to be a huge hit remains to be seen. Sony has found itself at a critical moment, and it’s going to take a next-level game to remind gamers that PlayStation hasn’t lost sight of what made it such a great brand worth following in the first place.
