South Koreans are calling for changes to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s opening sequence, as the game uses real footage from the Itaewon tragedy in 2022. Because of its premise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has not been exempt from controversy, and now Activision has responded to concerns about its opening montage.
As reported by South Korean SBS News, real news footage from the Itaewon crowd crush tragedy from Halloween 2022 has been spotted in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s campaign opening sequence. The clip in question shows an emergency responder performing CPR on a victim. Recently, the 10.29 Itaewon Disaster Bereaved Families Association released a statement asking Activision to remove the video from Modern Warfare 4 entirely. The organization also described the use of the clip as “highly inappropriate and senseless” considering that many South Korean families and citizens still suffer from trauma. “If the game developer has even a minimum level of courtesy and empathy toward the victims, they should promptly take corrective measures,” continues the statement, as translated by SBS.
