GTA 6 Officially Confirms Major Quality-of-Life Gameplay Update

GTA 6 is making some significant changes to how players move around Vice City, including one quality-of-life improvement that has been a long time coming for Rockstar Games. Although the developer has spent years perfecting its open-world formula, certain gameplay mechanics have remained largely unchanged across multiple releases. However, Rockstar is taking a different approach with GTA 6’s gameplay.

Movement is particularly important in GTA 6, considering the sheer scale of its world and the number of activities available to Jason and Lucia. Rockstar has already discussed its efforts to improve realism and immersion in GTA 6, from more believable character animations to systems that respond to how players interact with their surroundings. However, the developer has also emphasized that realism shouldn’t come at the expense of fun, with some mechanics simplified or removed entirely to avoid unnecessary frustration.

GTA 6 Changes Sprinting

GTA 6 eliminates the need to repeatedly press a button to sprint, instead moving the action to the left sticks on both consoles. In previous entries, including GTA 5, players generally had to repeatedly tap X on PlayStation or A on Xbox to maintain their maximum running speed. With GTA 6, sprinting is instead activated by pressing the left analog stick, eliminating the need for constant button mashing.

The updated sprinting controls also bring GTA 6 in line with many modern third-person action games, where clicking the left analog stick has become the standard approach. Beyond convenience, the change could make it easier to control the camera while running, since players won’t need to repeatedly move their right thumb between the face buttons and analog stick. This should be particularly useful during police chases, combat encounters, and other situations where quickly navigating the environment is essential. Rockstar has not yet released the complete GTA 6 controller layout, however, so it’s unclear whether the traditional sprinting controls will remain available as an alternative.

Of course, Rockstar has much bigger gameplay changes on the way, including its new GTA 6 weapon wheel, NPC interactions, and the numerous activities scattered throughout Vice City. Still, improvements to something as fundamental as sprinting could be among the most immediately noticeable changes when players finally get their hands on the game. Rockstar has spent decades refining its approach to open-world gameplay, and removing unnecessary button mashing is a relatively straightforward way to make the experience more comfortable.

That said, there’s certainly a case to be made for ensuring that GTA 6 is not too comfortable. Friction in gameplay, while it runs a risk of alienating players, can go a long way in making a game stand out, as repetitive button mashing did for past Grand Theft Auto games. It remains to be seen how much friction remains in GTA 6, though, so fans who are worried about any degree of oversimplification will simply need to wait and see.
