Marvel Rivals developer NetEase Games has announced ECC: Redline, an upcoming tactical first-person shooter featuring an extensive battle royale mode similar to Call of Duty: Warzone. Although NetEase Games describes ECC: Redline‘s universe as a realistic battlefield, the game will feature operator abilities that defy some laws of physics, unlike Call of Duty: Warzone‘s mostly grounded gameplay mechanics.
The story premise in ECC: Redline is similar to that of games like The Finals. It depicts a futuristic world where athletes compete in combat-centric sports. The game’s title stands for Extreme Circuit Championship, the in-game show players take part in. NetEase hasn’t revealed much about the lore beyond the fact that players take on the role of ECC athletes’ managers, trying to make them famous and successful.
ECC: Redline Officially Unveils First Gameplay Trailer
- Genre: FPS, PvP, Battle Royale, MOBA
- Developer: NetEase Games (Galaxy Studio)
- Price: Expected to be free-to-play (unconfirmed)
NetEase officially revealed ECC: Redline on October 9, but the game has already had a closed playtest, suggesting players might not have to wait long for its launch. So far, Steam appears to be its only confirmed platform, but that could change in the future. NetEase Games has described ECC: Redline as “a competitive FPS built around extreme sports.” The company has also noted that its subsidiary, Galaxy Studio, is leading the project and that fans can expect more information about upcoming open beta tests in the near future.
ECC: Redline‘s battle royale mode looks quite similar to Call of Duty: Warzone, featuring an almost identical in-match UX/UI and even some similar sound effects. The same can be said about its core gameplay mechanics. Players jump out of a chopper at the start of a match, choose a landing spot, gather weapons and gear from the ground or loot boxes, and engage in combat. Killing enemies earns players money, which they can later use to purchase better firearms or upgrades. However, ECC: Redline seemingly wants to be more of a movement-oriented shooter, with some physics-defying gameplay mechanics.
The first cinematic trailer of ECC: Redline shows Angelica using their sword to deflect bullets.
NetEase Games has revealed four of ECC: Redline‘s operators and their special abilities. Lin is an agile operator equipped with a grappling hook and a portable zipline device. Damian is a tactical character who uses concussion grenades and one-way shields. Celine is a medic who uses tiny drones to help teammates. Finally, Angelica is a close-range combat specialist who wields a sword. While none of these abilities may sound particularly unrealistic, the first cinematic trailer of ECC: Redline shows Angelica using their sword to deflect bullets. In other words, operators’ abilities may not be as surreal as those in games like Valorant, but they still appear to feature some fictional elements.
ECC: Redline currently has no confirmed release window. However, NetEase Games may hold an open or closed beta test on Steam in the near future. Players can already sign up for the ongoing playtests outside Steam by filling out a form on the game’s official Chinese website. According to the developer, more than 500,000 players have already wishlisted ECC: Redline or signed up for its playtests, which is no small feat. In the coming months, it will be interesting to see whether ECC: Redline can match the success of other NetEase Games titles, such as Marvel Rivals.
