After eight years since its announcement, Bethesda has finally revealed that The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel is the official title of the fantasy franchise’s next chapter. The title was just recently leaked, but Bethesda used its 40th anniversary celebration as an opportunity to fully confirm that the rumors were true. There is still very little known about The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel, but the title offers at least a small hint of what to expect from the long-awaited project.
Honestly, I wondered if this day would ever even come. It’s been a long time since Bethesda first announced the next Elder Scrolls game, and the developer has remained frustratingly tight-lipped ever since. As exciting as an Elder Scrolls update is, Bethesda taking the series to the city of Sentinel also has me worried. This won’t be the first time that The Elder Scrolls has featured this city, but it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Bethesda is able to bring Sentinel to life in a way that meets modern world design standards.
It’s no secret that Starfield left a lot of longtime Bethesda fans disappointed. I thought Starfield was decent, but it definitely left a lot to be desired, especially after developers like CD Projekt Red significantly raised the bar for immersive open-world games with The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. The Witcher 3 is eight years older than Starfield and still feels far more compelling and lifelike than Bethesda’s space adventure ever did. Unfortunately, Starfield put a glaring spotlight on how dated Bethesda’s development style has become, and The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel can’t repeat the game’s design mistakes.

What has me the most concerned about The Elder Scrolls 6 is the fact that Sentinel is known as a major port city. It’s the capital of Hammerfell, and that means it has to really have some serious “wow factor” to drive home just how important a city it is. The last mainline Elder Scrolls game to feature Sentinel was Daggerfall, and the city is also part of The Elder Scrolls Online. World design standards have changed so much since then, and I’m worried that Bethesda won’t be able to fully sell the city’s grandeur.

Starfield’s Underwhelming City of Neon
My brain immediately goes to the city of Neon in Starfield. Bethesda teased the location as a cyberpunk-style Las Vegas party city where anything goes. What players actually got was a watered down area with lackluster NPCs and a bunch of neon lights thrown around to try and pull off a cyberpunk aesthetic. Like many Starfield features, it was a good concept that missed the mark with its execution. Cyberpunk 2077‘s Night City arriving three years before set up high expectations that Starfield‘s Neon simply wasn’t able to meet.
Sentinel’s design could face a similar problem. There have been a lot of games with deep exploration and compelling NPCs in the three years since Starfield came out, and there are going to be even more leaps forward by the time The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel finally gets here. Also, with GTA 6 on the way, there’s no telling just how much Rockstar will raise expectations even further. Don’t get me wrong; I want Bethesda to succeed and introduce a great new Elder Scrolls game, but Starfield will cast a shadow of doubt over the developer’s future projects until the studio is able to prove audiences wrong.
An eight-year wait to find out a game’s official title is deeply frustrating. It’s exciting to finally get an Elder Scrolls 6 update, but Bethesda has become far too comfortable with silence. Giving devs the time and space to make a great game is incredibly important, but keeping players in the dark for years on end isn’t great for community morale. However, the good news is that a title confirmation hopefully means that an Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel release date announcement is waiting around the corner.
It’s really hard to predict when Bethesda will come back out with a big announcement, though. The developer has been more vocal in 2026 about its upcoming projects than it has been in years. Between the Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters, Obsidian making a Fallout spin-off, and now The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel, this might be the last update fans get for a while. Since Xbox is under new leadership with Asha Sharma, Bethesda will hopefully be encouraged to be more transparent with fans, but only time will tell. Right now, this Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel announcement is better than no news at all, and it will be even more interesting to see if Bethesda has any other surprises in store at this year’s Game Awards in December.
