Sony has provided another update on the PlayStation 6, offering some encouraging news about the development of its next-generation console. There have been plenty of rumors and reports about the PS6’s pricing, hardware specifications, and release date, but Sony has confirmed very little, though it does say that preparation for the PS6 is moving forward as expected.
Of course, the biggest question surrounding the PS6 is when it will actually be released. Previous PlayStation generations have typically lasted around six or seven years before being replaced, although it seems PS5 could enjoy a longer lifespan because of various hardware issues around memory components (due to generative AI). That said, the PS6 is apparently on track.
Sony Offers New Update on PS6 Development Progress
During Sony’s November 5 financial results presentation, CFO Lin Tao confirmed that development of the PS6 is “progressing as scheduled,” as first reported by VGC. Sony’s 2027 fiscal year also begins in April 2027, meaning the company expects to make additional investments in its next-generation console throughout that period. Tao also emphasized that Sony intends to continue supporting its existing PlayStation business (like the new PS5 Black Friday deals) while preparing for the next system, stating:
“Looking ahead to the next fiscal year, we aim to continue to enhance user engagement and further strengthen monetization through the release of strong titles and the expansion of our service. We also intend to make solid progress in preparing for the next-generation platform.”

Tao also addressed Sony’s investment plans for the PS6, explaining that the company considers its next-generation hardware important to PlayStation’s future. However, Sony isn’t ready to share specific details about those investments or its plans for the console just yet. As the CFO said:
“From next fiscal year onward, there will be investment in the new platform. For future growth, we have to attach great importance to a new platform and make the necessary investments for that. We have to support the soundness of our platform and think about how rationally we can invest in that platform. We will announce that at an appropriate time in the future.”
Sony’s latest PS6 comments also came alongside another update on the PS5’s commercial performance. The company confirmed that it shipped 2.6 million PS5 consoles during the three months ending September 30, bringing lifetime shipments to 97.9 million units worldwide. Sony also reported a 9% increase in gaming revenue and an 89% increase in operating income compared to the same period last year. While PS5 hardware sales are gradually declining, Sony says this is expected at the current stage of the console’s lifespan.
However, Sony still hasn’t announced a release date for the PS6. During an earlier financial presentation, CEO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged that the company had not yet decided when its next console would launch or how much it would cost. Right now, while late 2027 is certainly possible, 2028 is seemingly becoming more and more attractive (and would line up with PlayStation’s plans to end disc production).
