The Legend of Zelda: Shadow Knight has arrived, giving fans a classic-style adventure to enjoy 100% free of charge. This brand-new quest harkens back to the days of classic Zelda, which will be nostalgic for long-time fans of the series.
The Zelda franchise is riding high at the moment, after the recent Ocarina of Time remake received rave reviews from critics. Recreating one of the best games of all time always carries the risk of not living up to the original, but Nintendo seems to have nailed it this time around. And while most fans will be occupied with the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, there’s another new release worth trying available right now.
The Legend of Zelda: Shadow Knight Fan Game Announced
Shadow Knight is a brand-new fan game released by Blackpaintbowser via PureZC, 100% free of charge. The game is built on the original Legend of Zelda, with a brand-new story that adds around three hours of content. It was created in ZQuest Classic, the game engine for making Legend of Zelda fan games, meaning it features the iconic pixel art style the original game is known for. It has an overwhelmingly purple aesthetic that helps it stand out from the crowd.

The creator says the new quest is filled with “many unique puzzles, events, bosses, and more,” including the titular Shadow Knight. As it’s a new release, Shadow Knight doesn’t have too many downloads or ratings so far, but on PureZC, it holds an impressive 4.5/5 rating, while also winning the Fall 2026 Quest Rebirth Contest. The synopsis for Zelda: Shadow Knight is as follows:
Every 100 years a Star known as the Wishing Star comes down to the earth to grant the wishes of the inhabitants.
During this time a festival is held where they honor the Wishing Star.
What will this century’s festival bring?
The Legend of Zelda franchise is lucky to have such a dedicated fan base that produces amazing fan games, giving others more content to enjoy regularly. Great tools like ZQuest Classic make these kinds of projects possible. Shadow Knight isn’t the only high-profile release – take The Legend of Zelda: The Rosemaster for example. That’s another ZQuest Classic-developed game that recently released, adding 80 hours of new content.
As fans continue to unveil all the secrets in the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, the new release will likely keep attention for a while. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the franchise. If nothing else, the latest release shows that it is alive and well, both in terms of quality and fan interest.
