Nintendo Switch 2’s Greatest Answer to $499 Is Its Game Library

Nintendo Switch 2’s Greatest Answer to 9 Is Its Game Library

It’s pretty clear now that Nintendo Switch 2 has a harder sell on its hands than its predecessor. Following a 37.4% year-over-year decline in hardware sales between April and September 2026, Nintendo is facing the challenge of convincing players that its latest console is worth $499. That’s considerable investment, particularly for anyone who already owns the original Switch. But in my opinion, Nintendo has a much stronger selling point than improved hardware specifications: its games.

From revisiting beloved classics like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to experiencing ambitious new first-party adventures and previously unavailable third-party releases, the Switch 2’s growing library could be its greatest answer to that price tag. That said, Nintendo still needs to strike a balance between capitalizing on nostalgia and giving players genuinely new reasons to upgrade. After all, a console is only as appealing as the experience it offers, so it’s imperative that Nintendo takes the opportunity here to make that library feel more essential than ever.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Just Became Part of a Bigger Nintendo Switch 2 Debate

Ocarina of Time Remake has reignited a bigger Switch 2 debate over whether Nintendo should make more remakes or keep prioritizing new ideas.

Nintendo’s Switch 2’s Sales Decline Makes Its $499 Price Tag Harder to Justify

Nintendo’s latest financial results make it quite clear that the Switch 2 has some ground to make up. According to its November 5 earnings report, the console sold 6.49 million units between April and September 2026, compared to 10.36 million during the same period last year. That’s a 37.4% year-over-year decline, with sales dropping from 3.82 million in the first quarter to 2.67 million in the second. As reported by Engadget, Nintendo also raised the console’s US price by $50, taking it from $449.99 to $499.99, citing higher memory costs and US tariffs.

Of course, it’s worth remembering that the Switch 2 launched in June 2025, which means last year’s figures benefited from excitement surrounding its arrival. Ultimately, a year-over-year decline doesn’t necessarily mean that players have lost interest in the console, nor can the price increase alone explain the drop. In fact, Nintendo maintained its forecast of 16.5 million hardware sales for the current fiscal year. But it’s hard to ignore that asking customers to spend almost $500 on a console is a bigger challenge, particularly when the novelty of a new generation is wearing off.

A console is only as appealing as the experience it offers, so it’s imperative that Nintendo takes the opportunity here to make that library feel more essential than ever.

It’s at this point that I think Nintendo needs to start leaning more heavily into what’s truly made its consoles appealing: its games. The original Switch had the advantage of a relatively fresh concept, sure, but improved performance, a larger display, and upgraded hardware only goes so far in convincing existing owners to upgrade. I think its growing library is becoming its strongest argument, really: there are plenty of major first-party releases and third-party games that have previously struggled to find a home on Nintendo hardware, so the Switch 2 has ample opportunity here to make its software lineup feel like an essential part of the purchase.

Nintendo also has the advantage of owning some of the biggest franchises in gaming, which gives it a nice, solid foundation to build on. It could be a new Super Mario adventure, or another major Pokemon release, and of course, revisiting classics like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The point is, there’s already an established audience willing to follow these series’ on new hardware, and it’s something that Nintendo should make the most of (especially when justifying its increasing prices.)

The Legend of Zelda Shows Why Switch 2 Needs a Strong Game Library

I do believe that few franchises demonstrate that potential better than The Legend of Zelda. Many have found the magic and appeal of revisiting a beloved classic like Ocarina of Time and its fresh presentation, especially for longtime fans who have fond memories of the original. That familiar experience gives Nintendo a valuable opening to turn veteran game fans into Switch 2 buyers, and even introduce a new generation of players to some of its most celebrated adventures.

This combination of nostalgia and novelty is what could make the Switch 2 worth the $499 price tag, even though I have to say it is steep. Better hardware is one thing, but the games should definitely be what makes the upgrade worthwhile. I think that the importance of a library with enough reason to invest is getting clearer, and most importantly, Nintendo shouldn’t overlook the advantage of having some of gaming’s most recognizable franchises at its helm.
