A new free-to-play co-op crime game on Steam called Rob Run has been dubbed a lite version of GTA 6 Online by some players, but it has gotten off to a rough start. Released on Steam in November 2026, Rob Run features open-world maps with 5,000 players in shared worlds, where they can role-play as cops, robbers, or civilians.
While Rob Run‘s launch hasn’t been exactly smooth, it peaked at more than 80,000 concurrent players on November 7, helping it climb to the top of Steam charts (via SteamDB). For those unfamiliar, developer Kefir describes Rob Run as “a brutal crime sandbox featuring thousands of players.” That said, the game seems to combine multiple genres. When playing as robbers, for example, Rob Run feels like a third-person extraction shooter game, tasking players with infiltrating stores or banks and escaping with valuables. From the cops’ perspective, the game plays more like a survival shooter, while civilians can enjoy a sandbox life sim experience.
Rob Run Ignites Comparisons to GTA 6 Online, but There’s a Catch
One of the things Rockstar has revealed about GTA 6‘s robberies is that the game will use a fence system, requiring players to secretly sell their stolen items. A similar idea sits at the heart of Rob Run‘s gameplay, with robbers having to reach fences and sell their valuables before cops can arrest or kill them in PvP encounters. While that partly explains the comparisons between the two games, Rob Run has received many negative reviews, with some players calling it a “Temu edition of GTA 6 Online.”
At the time of writing, Rob Run has mixed reviews on Steam, with around 43% of its nearly 7,000 ratings being negative. Although the game is completely free to play on Steam, unhappy players have criticized several aspects of its gameplay. One of the biggest issues appears to be PvP balance. For instance, robbers can kill other outlaw players, leading to campers who wait around fences to ambush them. The game also uses some AI-generated assets, which have drawn further criticism from some players.
Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero.
Players who enjoy the game believe its gameplay loop is engaging for a free-to-play Steam title. They argue that PvP imbalance is less noticeable when playing with a squad and that developers could replace the genAI artwork with actual works of artists once Rob Run leaves early access. Satisfied players also point out that the game “has potential” and that its core idea is strong enough to give it a chance and see how it develops over time.
Rob Run‘s developer, Kefir, is mostly known for its popular mobile games, such as Last Day on Earth: Survival. And Rob Run appears to be the studio’s first PC game on Steam. So far, the team has successfully caught the attention of PC players looking for something to play before GTA 6 arrives. However, its next step is to release more updates that can turn around its reviews and cement its place on Valve’s platform as the new co-op crime game everyone wants to play.
