Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Addresses Missing Switch 2 Port

Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Addresses Missing Switch 2 Port

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game that would make perfect sense on the Switch 2. Nintendo’s console has mouse controls thanks to the new Joy-Con 2 controllers, and Larian’s award-winning RPG would have been a great fit for its point-and-click capabilities. From the sound of it, the studio was down to bring Gale, Astarion, Shadowheart, and everyone else to Nintendo’s platform, but someone got in the way. Who? No one’s quite sure.

In an ongoing Reddit AMA, Larian CEO Swen Vincke was asked if Baldur’s Gate 3 would ever come to the Switch 2, with the fan even asking if it was possible. That’s a fair question. Though it runs on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, it is a very dense game that could cause smoke to come out of your Switch 2’s ports. But from the sound of it, Larian wasn’t allowed to make the call.

“We would have loved to, but it wasn’t our decision to make,” Vincke said in the replies.

Vincke didn’t get any more specific, but it’s entirely possible that Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, the Dungeons & Dragons IP owners, could have complicated any port efforts on Larian’s part. At the very least, they seem to be the only ones with the power in this arrangement to tell Larian it wasn’t allowed to work on it. Nintendo is another possible culprit, but I can’t imagine the Mario company wouldn’t want an acclaimed, award-winning game on its shiny new platform.

This doesn’t mean the dream of a Switch 2 Faerûn campaign is entirely out of the question, though. Wizards could have pinged a third-party partner to do the port work, but I somehow doubt Vincke would have responded to this at all if a Baldur’s Gate 3 Switch 2 edition were actively in the works. Whoever made this call, it’s a dumb one and there’s still time to rectify it.
