Classic Far Cry Games Could Be Getting Big Upgrades

Classic Far Cry Games Could Be Getting Big Upgrades

Three entries in the Far Cry series will soon be upgraded to 60 frames per second (FPS) on consoles, according to cryptic social media posts by Ubisoft that were quickly deciphered by fans. Ubisoft then confirmed that the three Far Cry titles that will be upgraded to support 60 FPS on current-gen consoles are Far Cry 3, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, and Far Cry Primal.

Originally launched in 2004, the Far Cry franchise has become known for its various open-world environments, fast first-person action, and themes of survival in a lawless land. Although the first Far Cry game was made by Crytek, Ubisoft has since developed and published subsequent entries. However, the Far Cry franchise has been absent from Ubisoft’s repertoire for a few years. The most recent entry in the Far Cry series was 2021’s Far Cry 6, which saw actor Giancarlo Esposito play the role of the game’s main antagonist, Anton “El Presidente” Castillo. As of this writing, Far Cry 6 holds a mixed to mostly positive rating on Steam.

Division 3 Producer Was Hyping the Game as a “Monster” Just a Week Ago, But Now He’s Working on Battlefield

After discussing the future of The Division franchise for Ubisoft, Julian Gerighty announces that he’s left the company to join Battlefield Studios.

Three Classic Far Cry Titles Will Be Playable at 60 FPS Soon

Although Far Cry 3, Blood Dragon, and Primal are currently capped at 30 FPS on consoles, that will not be the case soon. On January 16, Ubisoft posted a cryptic picture on X that showed three equations using emojis. The emoji combinations were quickly figured out by fans, who figured out that Far Cry 3, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, and Far Cry Primal will be playable at 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. Ubisoft awarded a ‘gold star’ in response to users who guessed their riddles correctly, and the company later clarified that the 60 FPS updates would arrive on Wednesday, January 21. However, it is unclear if these updates will be available for free or if these will require separate purchases on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Currently, the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the aforementioned Far Cry games can be played on current-gen hardware via backward compatibility, which include features like a 1440p gameplay resolution and auto HDR. However, PS5 users in particular may get the better end of the upgrade deal. PS Plus Extra subscribers currently have access to Far Cry 3 Classic Edition, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition, and Far Cry Primal via the Game Catalog. Given that PS Plus Extra costs $14.99 per month, it remains to be seen whether the Far Cry upgrades will be available via that method. Far Cry 3 Classic Edition is also available via the Far Cry 5 Season Pass. Further details about the Far Cry upgrades, including download size and other features, remain unknown as of this writing.

Ubisoft May Have More Surprises Planned

Ubisoft’s social media tease for Far Cry may just be the tip of the iceberg for the company. Various rumors have indicated that Ubisoft may soon have announcements for the Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed franchise. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake could soon be available for launch, along with the highly-anticipated remaster of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. Given that both Ubisoft titles have been the subject of speculation throughout 2025, it stands to reason that Ubisoft could show fans more details to kick off 2026. But, unless the company states otherwise, rumors about Ubisoft’s plans should be taken with a fine grain of salt.

Regardless of Ubisoft’s immediate plans, current-gen console gamers will soon be able to experience three of the top Far Cry titles at a higher frame rate. With the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S now into their sixth year on the market, time will tell if other past-gen titles will get upgrades that take advantage of each system’s hardware.
