A new leak coming from the ESRB indicates that a Resident Evil 5 remake reveal may very well be right around the corner. Capcom has been steadily working its way through the Resident Evil series with remakes alongside the franchise’s new releases, and Resident Evil 5 may soon join the list.
There’s plenty to be excited for in the Resident Evil fandom right now, with Resident Evil Requiem releasing later in February 2026. The upcoming game will see the return of classic series protagonist Leon S. Kennedy, as well as newcomer Grace Ashcroft, and will take players back to the ruined city of Raccoon City. Outside of the new entry, fans have been wondering if leaks are accurate that Resident Evil Code: Veronica will finally get the remake treatment, or if the franchise will first tackle Resident Evil 5. This new leak may hint at the answer.
Rumor: Resident Evil 0 Remake Will Release in 2028
A new rumor indicates that the remake of the popular Resident Evil 0 will be out in 2028, and gives fans some fresh details about it.
Resident Evil 5 Remake Leaked by ESRB
On February 10, a listing was discovered on the Entertainment Software Ratings Board for Resident Evil 5 on Xbox Series X/S. Though the original game is available for Xbox Series X/S via backward compatibility, there is no native version of the game for that system. While most of the game listing is a boilerplate description of what qualifies Resident Evil 5 for a Mature rating, one curious element is a mention of in-game purchases. While the original Resident Evil 5 did have additional purchases in the form of DLC, since the release of Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition, these have been included with the base game. Other Resident Evil remakes have also included microtransactions, adding further credence to the notion of this rating being for a full-fledged remake of Resident Evil 5.
Though some leaks have indicated that Code Veronica is next on the remake list, there are some other hints that Resident Evil 5 may have jumped the line. The voice and motion capture actor who portrayed Resident Evil 5 co-star Sheva Alomar, Eva La Dare, has teased on Twitter that something exciting is arriving in March which she can’t talk about yet, and used a number of Resident Evil hashtags in the tweet, including one for RE 5 and another referring to Resident Evil‘s 30th anniversary. Sheva has notably not appeared in a game since Resident Evil 5. However, it’s worth noting that prior Resident Evil remakes haven’t brought back the original cast of actors, so if she returns, Sheva would be the first exception to the rule.
Although a listing has only been found for an Xbox version so far, a remake would most likely launch for PlayStation and PC as well. A PlayStation State of Play has been announced for February 12, which could potentially reveal a Resident Evil 5 remake. Players don’t have long to wait to find out, but they should take this leak with a grain of salt. Resident Evil 5 in particular has a mixed reputation. While many fans loved playing it with a co-op partner, the original partner AI received a lot of negative feedback. There’s also been controversy surrounding the setting of Africa and the enemies fought there. There will likely be some effort put into convincing players that the issues they remember with the game have been fixed or amended, and with Resident Evil 5 being a major franchise entry, it’s highly unlikely that a remake will be shadow-dropped. Even if the upcoming State of Play reveals the remake, it may be a while before it actually reaches players.

Whether Resident Evil Code: Veronica or Resident Evil 5 get the remake treatment first, it’s highly likely that both are in development. Remaking the older games in the series has helped to keep the Resident Evil content flowing, giving players a chance to revisit the classics in a reimagined light in-between new major entries. Add to that a new Resident Evil movie arriving later in 2026 and the ongoing Resident Evil Survival Unit mobile game, and there’s no shortage of Capcom survival horror to be had.
