Konami is Making an Ambitious New JRPG That is Inspired by the Genre’s Classics

Konami has utilized Sony’s massive February 2026 State of Play presentation to announce Rev. NOiR, a brand-new action RPG that draws heavily from the genre’s past. The new title sees Konami return to the role-playing genre. Though the company released the manga-inspired action RPG Eden’s Zero in 2025, it’s far more well-known for its action-oriented franchises like Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania, as well as horror games like the Silent Hill series.

Despite its more well-known franchises taking much of the spotlight, Konami has a storied history of creating RPGs. The most well-known of these role-playing adventures is the Suikoden series. The popular RPG series began on the PS1 in 1995 and spawned five mainline titles and six spin-offs, making it one of Konami’s most successful franchises of the era. An updated remaster of the first two Suikoden games, titled Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remastered: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, was released for modern consoles on March 6, 2025, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version made available on the console’s launch of June 6.

Upcoming Role-Playing Games People Are Excited For

While plenty of RPGs have been announced for 2026 and beyond, these upcoming role-playing games are especially exciting.

Konami’s Brand-New RPG Takes Inspiration From The Classics

Konami has announced Rev. NOiR, an all-new action RPG that appears heavily inspired by the genre’s past. The new title, confirmed to be in development for the PlayStation 5, is just one of the titles Konami revealed during Sony’s extensive State of Play showcase, which also saw the announcement of a brand-new mainline Castlevania game and the unveiling of its Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection Vol 2. While many of those titles are confirmed for release in 2026, Konami has not yet revealed a release window for Rev. NOiR.

Set in a world where falling drops of light cause death and destruction for any individual it touches, Rev. NOiR follows a young man with amnesia who is awakened by a mysterious woman with unique abilities. Together, the two set out to unravel the mystery of the light fall and reverse the fate of their homeland. While few details have been revealed about the title, the game’s trailer indicates that it will feature real-time action RPG combat, reminiscent of recent Final Fantasy games. The brief moments of gameplay invoke memories of titles like Final Fantasy 15 and Final Fantasy 16 specifically, with the main character dodging enemy attacks and warping toward his foes in a streak of light.

Based on its debut trailer, many RPG fans will feel right at home with Rev. NOiR‘s look and feel. The game’s anime-inspired aesthetic has drawn comparisons to many popular past RPG titles, such as Bandai Namco’s Tales series and Sega’s Phantasy Star games, and while its apocalyptic narrative allows it to stand out on its own, it’s far from the first RPG where the state of the world shapes its story. The visual of the game’s main character causing unbridled destruction around him, along with the stunning shots of that destruction reversing itself, gives the game a unique and intriguing air of mystery that feels like a modern take on the tenured genre.

Rev. NOiR was introduced at Sony’s presentation by the game’s producer, Nobuki Kadoi, best known for his work on Drakengard 2. A self-described long-time fan of the genre, he and the other members of the Rev. NOiR development team aim to capture the grand adventures and engaging story beats that have defined RPGs with this new title. The game’s tried and true visuals, modern combat style, and genuinely unique premise will have RPG fans itching to know more as we draw closer to Rev. NOiR‘s release.
