As of early morning on February 16, Twitter is suffering a massive service outage. Said outage is causing Twitter users not to be able to access the social media site either on desktop or mobile, affecting nearly every aspect of the service. While some users may still be able to access the popular website, the number of reported issues shot up by around 270,000+%.
At roughly 7:22 am CT, downdetector.com reported a massive spike in outage reports for the website. Within 15 minutes, the baseline of 15 reports (which is the average for the site) spiked to over 42,000. There is no clear indication, as of this writing, when Twitter will be back up. This article will be updated when Twitter is live once again.

Twitter users are reporting issues related to the app, comments and messaging, feed and the timeline, login capabilities, posting/publishing, server connections, and the website. In other words, it’s a total outage. It’s apparent to anyone currently trying to use the website in whatever form, but downdetector’s methodology makes it absolutely clear when it is a widespread issue as opposed to a local one.
Twitter Issue Reports Are Flooding In
In short, downdetector is constantly detecting problems for a company, as well as status updates made available by downdetector explorer users. It tracks a daily view of problem reports by the minute and hour, showing how many users are having issues with a website or service at any given time. When this number spikes, it is usually indicative of an outage issue. The bigger the spike, the more widespread the issue. Users can report problems, as well as select the type of issues, to help determine whether it is a specific issue (such as messages not working, as opposed to a complete outage).
It ultimately remains to be seen how long this mid-February outage lasts. Typically, issues are resolved within minutes if not an hour or so, but it’s also not impossible that outages last longer dependent on the specific reason for the outage.
