With Resident Evil Requiem spoilers now flooding the internet, RE2 director Hideki Kamiya has issued a strong statement about the leaks and those who share them. Gamers have waited a while to get their hands on Resident Evil Requiem, so to have it spoiled just days before its release against their will would be an enormous shame.
Resident Evil Requiem is set to release on February 27 for PC, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S. However, last week, physical copies of the game were accidentally released ahead of the planned launch date, and Resident Evil Requiem spoilers quickly spread online. Gamers who want to enjoy the story blind are advised to avoid social media between now and then, as the plot for the entire game is readily available for those who seek it out, despite Capcom’s appeals for no spoilers pre-release. Given it has been five years since the last mainline game in the series, to find out the plot via an X post would certainly be somewhat anticlimactic and disappointing.
Resident Evil: 8 Biggest Traditions In The Series
The Resident Evil franchise stands out thanks to some of its iconic traditions, some of which will also make a comeback in Requiem.
Former Resident Evil Director Says Spoiling Requiem ‘Deserves a Thousand Deaths’
In a lengthy post on X, machine-translated from Japanese, Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya shared his scathing thoughts on the leaks and those who share them, saying, “I’m sure the final developments of Resident Evil 2 were also exposed in a weekly photo magazine… For your own selfish satisfaction, you trampled on the feelings of users who were looking forward to the game, as well as the feelings of the creators who put all their effort into making it.” Kamiya did not mince his words, continuing, “It’s a despicable act that destroys the happiness of everyone, and deserves a thousand deaths… May you be cursed to never be able to play games again…”
Although Kamiya has not been involved in the Resident Evil series in over two decades, it’s clear how strongly he feels about this particular issue. Even though Kamiya has been notoriously outspoken online in the past, his feelings about these leaks make a lot of sense. As he points out in his post, Resident Evil 2 was leaked before its 1998 release, and with the growth of leak culture on the internet in the decades since, this issue has only gotten worse. Leaks for many games feel unavoidable nowadays, and gamers almost have to take matters into their own hands by deliberately avoiding spoilers wherever possible to keep the authentic experience of a first-time playthrough intact.
It’s a despicable act that destroys the happiness of everyone, and deserves a thousand deaths.
Nowadays, Kamiya is the founder of independent studio Clovers. His new studio is working with Capcom once again, this time on the long-awaited Okami sequel, which was revealed at The Game Awards 2024. Hopefully his next game is able to stay leak-free, especially given how long fans have waited to get their hands on a new Okami game.
It wasn’t just Resident Evil Requiem that suffered leaks recently. Earlier this month, Capcom’s plans for Resident Evil games over the next three years were seemingly leaked, indicating a few exciting remakes could be on the way. Those plans also included a potential Resident Evil 10 release for 2029, which would be a very quick turnaround given the five years between RE Village and Requiem. Regardless, if these leaks prove to be true, then fans of the franchise have a lot to be excited about over the next few years.
