Steam Users Have Until April 25 to Claim Open-World Adventure Game Completely Free of Charge

For a limited time, Steam users can download an indie open-world adventure game completely free of charge until April 25 at 10 am PT/1 pm ET. It’s part of Steam’s Free-to-Keep promotion, pushing the game to the top of the on-site search bar and ensuring visibility as an extremely small-scale indie game.

If anyone has taken advantage of the promotion before, they know that the quality of Steam’s free game selection can teeter between solid and not great. Keeping in mind its small-scale nature, the latest free game typically only costs $5.99. That’s basically nothing in today’s economy, but as the old saying goes, free is free.

Which is Better? Steam’s Free-to-Keep Promotion vs. Epic Games Store’s Weekly Free Games

The Epic Games Store is renowned for its free game giveaways, but how do they compare to the free games given away on Steam, its biggest competitor?

Claim SurrounDead Poly Construction FREE on Steam

The free Steam game in question is titled SurrounDead Poly Construction, developed and published by indie game dev LivingEveryday. At first glance, its lanky, playdough-like graphics bring games like Human Fall Flat to mind. However, it’s clearly very different from that game—even on a scope level. In short, SurrounDead Poly Construction is a self-described “open-world survival adventure game” focused on solving puzzles, collecting the correct items, and defeating all enemies between the player and the end goal.

Played from a third-person perspective, players can collect resources and craft materials, advance those features to create new elements, and acquire new and improved weapons, equipment, and buildings. In doing so, they have free rein in the indie game’s open world, where they also complete combat (with said items) and solve puzzles. Finally, SurrounDead Poly Construction offers online multiplayer to challenge levels with friends in what is said to be a relaxed and casual atmosphere.

Unfortunately, Surroundead Poly Construction does not seem to be the best-received game on Steam’s Free-to-Keep promotion. It does not yet have enough reviews on the platform to warrant a “grade” from Steam itself, but they appear to trend negatively. Many accuse it of being an asset flip that plays incredibly similarly to the other games from LivingEveryDay, and there are a plethora of amateur, technical issues with the game around the .exe file. Compared to other games on Steam’s Free-to-Keep promotion, like Sentience: The Android’s Tale or Legend of Keepers: Career of a Dungeon Manager, this game may not quite live up to expectations. Luckily, those games are still available for a very short time (as of this writing).

The category for round 1 is …

Also available via the Steam Free-to-Keep promotion, Sentience: The Android’s Tale and Legend of Keepers: Career of a Dungeon Manager are very different games, but both focus on agency. Sentience is a story-driven adventure game where you play as an android in a colony and make decisions that shape relationships and lead to different endings. Meanwhile, Legend of Keepers is a strategy roguelike game where you run a dungeon, hire monsters, set traps, and stop heroes from getting your treasure while managing resources between battles. One is about story and choices, while the other is about strategy and replayable gameplay. Both are free for a short time, after which SurrounDead Poly Construction remains free for a little while longer.
