Last week’s shadowdroppped launch of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition has been controversial, and some players are requesting refunds for the $5 Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack after stating that the updated textures look worse than the original Switch port. The negative feedback concerning Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on Switch 2 has largely focused on how the game looks in handheld mode.
On February 19, Nintendo surprised fans by releasing the Switch 2 port of Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Nintendo eShop for $5. The company later confirmed that physical Switch 2 copies of Xenoblade Chronicles X would arrive on April 16, starting at $65. Xenoblade Chronicles X takes place on the planet Mira, as the player character joins an expedition force to uncover Mira’s mysteries and overcome various dangers. The Switch 2 version of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition includes support for up to 4K resolution when the console is docked, along with a new frame rate cap of 60 FPS.

Xenoblade Chronicles X Players Are Getting Refunds for Switch 2 Upgrade Pack
Although Xenoblade Chronicles X has been hailed as one of the top Wii U games of all time, the Switch 2 port has received some negative feedback concerning its textures and handheld mode performance. On the Xenoblade Chronicles subreddit, players have started requesting refunds for the $5 Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack for Xenoblade Chronicles X, including Reddit user Tamodolo. Although Nintendo does not usually accept refund requests for eShop purchases, Tamodolo stated they got their money back after listing the technical issues that appear throughout the game.
Tamodolo stated that some filtering has been applied to an upscaled image that has been rendered at 1080p, and not at a native 4K resolution. The player also stated that users can request a refund from the Nintendo eShop via the Contact Us page to set up a chat with a Nintendo customer service agent. Users may receive their refund in approximately 5 to 10 minutes at the earliest, though refunds are not necessarily guaranteed. In response, some users shared they were successful in getting a refund, while others disputed how Xenoblade Chronicles X textures look on Switch 2 compared to the original Switch.
Another Reddit thread from YonkRaccoon shared how some of Xenoblade Chronicles X‘s textures looked in handheld mode, with other users pointing out how blurry the environment can appear. Given the complaints that Xenoblade Chronicles X‘s Switch 2 Edition has received since it’s February 19 launch, users called on Nintendo to release another patch that addresses the complaints at hand. As of this writing, Nintendo has not publicly commented on Xenoblade Chronicles X on Switch 2 following its launch, so fans must wait for further information with regard to the Switch 2 port.
Not All Switch 2 Upgrades Are Created Equal
While Xenoblade Chronicles X‘s Switch 2 upgrade costs $5, it is not the only first-party Nintendo title to receive such treatment in 2026. In January, Nintendo launched a Switch 2 upgrade pack for Animal Crossing: New Horizons nearly six years after the game’s 2020 launch. Along with the upgraded resolution, Animal Crossing: New Horizon‘s Switch 2 upgrade pack also allows users to play the game with the Joy-Con 2 controllers in mouse mode, and a new megaphone item was added to Nook’s Cranny to make it easier to call out villagers by name using the Switch 2’s microphone.
By comparison, other Switch titles, including Super Mario Odyssey and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, receive their Switch 2 upgrades for free via content patches that required an Internet download. In the case of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the games’ Switch 2 patches addressed most performance issues and increased the frame rate cap to 60 FPS. Given that Xenoblade Chronicles X on Switch 2 will have a physical release in April, some players remained hopeful that Nintendo would address the game’s issues by that point. Time will tell if that will be the case.
