Highguard is Permanently Shutting Down This Month

Highguard, the ambitious but highly controversial free-to-play hero shooter from Wildlight Entertainment, is officially closing its servers and shutting down for good on March 12, 2026. In a heartfelt announcement shared on the official Highguard X account, Wildlight thanked the community for its support since launch, revealed plans for one final update, and urged players to jump back in to enjoy the game before its legacy comes to a close.

The shutdown marks an exceedingly rapid end to a live-service title that debuted less than two months ago, and initially won over millions of players despite facing plenty of resistance on what seemed to be all sides. Even after attracting more than 2 million players over the course of its life, some of whom believed it could become something great, Wildlight said it was “not able to build a sustainable player base” to support Highguard long term, prompting the understandably difficult decision to sunset the project.

Highguard Had a Promising Debut But Faded Fast

Highguard was first revealed in late 2025 as The Game Awards’ “one last thing,” a highly coveted showcase slot typically reserved for major new games, beloved franchises, and titles from seasoned, well-known developers. Developed by Wildlight, a studio founded by veterans of Apex Legends, Titanfall, and Call of Duty, it initially came into the increasingly crowded live-service hero shooter space with a strong foundation.

Highguard‘s January 2026 launch and the days leading up to it brought plenty of attention to the hero shooter, and its initial player numbers—including a peak of nearly 100,000 concurrent users on Steam—seemed to suggest that it could actually overcome early skepticism, even in what is normally a somewhat relentless genre. However, that momentum was fleeting, as interest in the game dropped immensely in the weeks that followed.

Community Response and Struggles to Sustain Interest

After its launch, Highguard faced mixed reception from both its players and its critics. While some praised it for its fast-paced movement, mounted combat, and unique Raid mode, others criticized it for its pacing, performance, and even its presentation. Steam charts and other data tracked a steep decline in active players within just a month of Highguard‘s release, offering an early sign of its difficulty in retaining a committed community.

If that wasn’t enough, Wildlight underwent some major internal changes in February when reports emerged that “most” of the development team had been laid off, leaving only a skeleton crew to support the game from then on. Wildlight confirmed layoffs at the time but also said a core group of developers stayed to support Highguard‘s continued development.

Highguard’s Final Update and the Last Days of Play

Despite announcing the shutdown, Wildlight said it plans to release one final content update before March 12. That patch is set to introduce a new Warden character for Highguard, a new weapon, account level progression, and skill trees—all features that were widely anticipated by the community and likely could have served as hooks to keep the game’s audience around longer.

Highguard‘s servers will remain live until March 12, 2026, giving players about a week to log in, experience the last update, and share a few final matches with their friends and random rivals. For many dedicated players and content creators who invested time in Highguard over its short life, these last days may offer something of a bittersweet farewell. Now, as Highguard prepares to go dark, its story stands as a reminder that initial buzz and major reveals don’t automatically lead to long-term success, especially in an increasingly saturated market where player attention is scarce, criticism is natural, and expectations run high.
