Punisher Special Releases Behind-The-Scenes Photos Of Viral Scene

Earlier this week, Disney+ released a new Marvel special called Punisher: One Last Kill. The mini-movie follows the Punisher before the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which will feature the character when it comes to theaters on July 31. It also featured a shot that looked like unfinished VFX, which fans jokingly said made actor Jon Bernthal look like a PlayStation 3 version of Joel from The Last of Us. However, after the odd-looking scene went viral, Marvel and Disney have released behind-the-scenes photos of the scene, in case you were still skeptical that it was shot on camera.

They really left an unfinished VFX shot in #Punisher LOL😭😭😭 pic.twitter.com/ISMmbhFeeY

As previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the scene of the Punisher falling onto a metal crate was shot first with Bernthal falling backward, and then with a stunt double actually making contact. The CGI weirdness fans picked up on was that a 3D mockup of Bernthal’s face was put onto the stunt actor, which looked off compared to the non-edited shots that sandwich it. Now, we have a few set photos from this scene as proof, which show Bernthal and the stunt actor swapping places while filming.

Marvel

While it may quiet one part of the criticism, it does draw attention to the fact that the shot itself was probably not ideal if Marvel wanted to mask the process and not take folks out of the movie for a second. A different angle and framing might have disguised the awkward CGI without the need for Bernthal to perform the full stunt by himself. Ultimately, the on-site crew can only do so much, and the editing team only has so much to work with when it gets the raw footage. So maybe it was just a series of bad calls coalescing into one unfortunate viral moment.

Punisher: One Last Kill is the fourth time Bernthal has portrayed the vigilante in the MCU, having debuted way back in 2016 in the original Daredevil series., Brand New Day will be the first time his version of the character is in a feature film.
