Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned Main and Side Missions
Borderlands 4‘s first Story Pack DLC focuses on the new main story missions for Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned. This DLC story sees the return of fan-favorite Borderlands character Ellie as she seeks to take down a new cosmic threat to Kairos located in The Whispering Glacier. Fans of Borderlands 3‘s Guns, Love, and Tentacles DLC will also be happy to see Mancubus Bloodtooth return, moving from his job running The Lodge on Xylourgos to help guide the player in this quest.
Characters Returning in the DLC
- Ellie
- Mancubus Bloodtooth
- Pickle
- Crazy Earl
Along with Ellie and Mancubus, Pickle from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is also returning to the series. Although Pickle is one of the Borderlands series’ more controversial characters, he has the chance to redeem himself in the eyes of fans once and for all in this DLC. Ellie’s mother, Moxxi, is also here to aid her and the player in their quest. Moxxi already appears in Borderlands 4‘s base game, running the Bottom’s Up! bar in Carcadia Burn, but she will likely have a more pivotal story role with her daughter Ellie now involved in the events on Kairos.
New Vault Hunter — C4SH
Arguably, the star of Borderlands 4‘s upcoming DLC is the new playable character, C4SH, who joins Vex, Rafa, Harlow, and Amon as the latest Vault Hunter in the series. Fans of Borderlands 3‘s FL4K will be happy to see another robot Vault Hunter, and C4SH looks like he will be bringing some interesting new gameplay features to the table. Revealed in the recent character trailer for C4SH, the Vault Hunter is a former CasinoBot who gained a magical card deck complete with eldritch powers after winning a high-stakes card game, making his play style all about luck and stacking the deck in his favor.
C4SH’s Action Skills in Borderlands 4
- Cross-Fire
- Sleight of Hand
- Cleromancy
C4SH gains stacks of Fortune each time he kills an enemy, and has the chance to activate his unique Vault Hunter trait, Windfall, after reloading or using an Action Skill. While Windfall is active, C4SH consumes all stacks of Fortune to increase Skill and Gun Damage, while modifying his equipped Action Skill. The first Action Skill C4SH can use is Cross-Fire, which lets C4SH pull out his Dual Revolvers and automatically fire them at enemies in a third-person perspective, similar to Rafa’s Arc-Knives. While Windfall is active, shots from C4SH’s Dual Revolvers gain Ricochet Chance.
Sleight of Hand allows C4SH to draw a card in each hand, which can be thrown at enemies for a random effect. While Windfall is active, the effects of these cards are increased. Cleromancy lets C4SH roll his bone dice and summon a Bone Totem that fights alongside him based on the result. While Windfall is active, the dice always land on a unique result, and rolling doubles lets C4SH summon a Badass version of the Bone Totem.
C4SH will also have access to 8 unique heads and 1 alternate Vault Hunter body in the DLC.
New Map Zone — The Whispering Glacier
As if Kairos wasn’t already hostile enough, The Whispering Glacier brings an icy cold environment full of Eridium spikes, rivers of blood, and flesh growths. The eldritch environment will feel familiar to fans of Borderlands 3‘s Guns, Love, and Tentacles DLC, where the map of Xylourgos featured a similar environment. The Whispering Glacier also features a twist on the World Boss mechanic of Borderlands 4, where communing with eldritch trees gives players access to a random boss encounter.
New Bosses, New Loot, and New Cosmetics
Players can test out their C4SH builds against a variety of new enemies, including several enemies returning from The Pre-Sequel, such as Kraggons, Scavs, and DAHL Legion Soldiers. Additionally, Borderlands 4 is getting a ton of new loot in the expansion, including 2 new Legendary Shields, 2 new Legendary Grenades, 2 new Legendary Heavy Weapons, 5 new Legendary Class Mods (1 per Vault Hunter), 10 new Legendary Weapons, and 3 Pearlescent weapons. There are also several new cosmetics to unlock, including:
- 2 Vault Hunter Heads usable by all Vault Hunters
- 4 Vault Hunter Skins usable by all Vault Hunters
- 8 Vault Hunter Heads usable by C4SH
- 2 Vault Hunter Bodies usable by C4SH (base + alternate)
- 4 Weapon Skins
- 4 Vehicle Skins
- 3 ECHO-4 Drone Skins and Attachments
- 1 ECHO-4 Frame
Borderlands 4 Major Update 1.5 Also Launches on March 26
Story Pack 1 isn’t the only new content launching for Borderlands 4 on March 26. Players who aren’t interested in picking up this DLC can also experience new features via the free Borderlands 4 v1.5 update as well. With this update, Borderlands 4 is adding a couple of highly-requested features to the game that should help players jumping back into the game for the DLC get their footing.
Content Included in this Free Borderlands 4 Update
- Increasing the level cap from 50 to 60
- Shared progression
So far, the major free update for Borderlands 4 coming alongside Story Pack 1 is set to include an increase to the level cap by 10, taking Borderlands 4‘s level cap from 50 to 60. This is great news for players who had already maxed out their character and are looking to take their build further. Possibly even more exciting is the addition of shared progression across all of a player’s Borderlands 4 characters. This means things like SDU unlocks, map progress, Vault Fragments, Glide Pack upgrades, and more will be shared across the player’s account. Having access to these features from the get-go will make starting a C4SH build so much more viable for players who have already completed Borderlands 4‘s main story.
