Epic Games Hit With Mass Layoffs

Epic Games Hit With Mass Layoffs

Epic Games has announced sweeping layoffs that will impact over 1,000 people today. It’s the second time major layoffs are impacting Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite and the Unreal game engine, in three years. Though 2026 is still relatively new, there have already been several notable waves of job losses and studio closures across the industry.

These latest cuts from Epic feel eerily similar to the last time the developer had a mass layoff. Epic Games eliminated 16% of its staff in 2023, impacting hundreds of employees across the company. At the time, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said the job losses were a result of operating costs that outpaced revenue, forcing the company to make cuts in order to stabilize the business. The company restructured, and signaled that it would focus on its core priorities like Fortnite and Unreal Engine. It’s nearly identical to the reasoning the company provided for these most recent job cuts.

Epic Games Laid Off Over 1,000 People

On March 24, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney shared the news regarding the layoffs with employees via a note that was also posted to the Epic Games blog. In it, Sweeney said over 1,000 people are losing their jobs today due to a downturn in Fortnite engagement that began in 2025, stating the company is spending more than its making. According to Sweeney, the cuts are necessary in order to maintain company funding and to better position the company to be in a more stable place. He pointed to greater industry-wide challenges, including weaker consumer spending, fewer console sales compared to previous console generations, and video games competing with other “increasingly-engaging forms of entertainment.”

The recent job losses at Epic Games join an increasingly growing list of studio closures and layoffs that have impacted the industry since January. Sweeney said impacted workers will receive severance pay of at least four months, paid healthcare coverage for six months in the US, and accelerated stock option vesting through next January.

In the blog post, Sweeney pointedly explained that these job cuts were not related to AI. Generative AI has been another emerging trend in the video games industry this year, with undisclosed generative AI assets popping up in games like Crimson Desert in recent weeks. “Since it’s a thing now, I should note that the layoffs aren’t related to AI,” Sweeney wrote in the post. The Epic Games CEO said the company now needs to focus on creating new Fortnite experiences through gameplay, seasons, story and events, while also indicating it plans to accelerate building developer tools like Unreal Engine 6. These were the company’s same plans following the 2023 layoffs.

The situation at Epic reflects broader challenges that have been building across the industry for years. Development timelines continue to stretch as games become more complex, often requiring large teams working across multiple studios. When a major project doesn’t do well, it often has a human cost. At the same time, the uptick in player spending during the COVID-19 pandemic has cooled, creating a difficult environment for companies that scaled during the boom. Live-service games in particular are under pressure, as maintaining player engagement requires constant updates, content drops, and technical support, all of which come with rising costs.

Several emerging factors could continue to shape how studios operate in 2026. Generative AI tools are becoming more common in development pipelines, raising questions about efficiency, creativity, and long-term staffing needs. Hardware-related concerns like ongoing RAM supply constraints could affect production timelines and console hardware sales over the next few years. While unfortunate, these pressures could suggest that the layoffs impacting the games industry are part of a wider recalibration as the industry adjusts to a more uncertain and competitive landscape.
