The evolution of video games from simple 2D adventures to epic 3D open-world experiences has served as a major divide between what players perceive to be retro and what audiences expect from modern releases. And yet, 2D gaming continues to be just as popular in the modern era of video games as it was back when it first hit arcade cabinets and home consoles decades ago. While many gamers prefer the stylish realism of 3D, others enjoy the rush of nostalgia brought on by 2D. Looking to blend together the best of both visual worlds, the upcoming Steam title Screenbound seeks to become the world’s first 5D game, offering an unexpected twist to newer video game aesthetics and gameplay.
Many will credit games like Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog for the success of old-school 2D platforming games, while the 3D era has become so ever-present, largely due to major improvements in the technology used both in game development and gaming hardware. It is not entirely uncommon to see 2D launches, especially among indie projects, though it is arguably rare to see it blended with 3D. Super Mario Odyssey is perhaps the best example of an AAA game that includes true 2D gameplay sections within a larger 3D world, but even those segments were brief and not a main focus of the game. Screenbound follows a similar mix of 2D and 3D, though, unlike Odyssey, Screenbound fully utilizes both aesthetics to create a new 5D experience.

Steam Next Fest includes an early look at an upcoming platformer that combines the gameplay of Little Big Planet with the themes of Lies of P.
Screenbound Trailer Showcases the World’s First 5D Game
First revealed during the OTK Games Expo 2024, Screenbound sees players controlling a 3D character in a first-person perspective while that character carries a 2D Qboy gamepad that simultaneously mirrors all the actions made in the 3D world. Players are tasked with navigating through dual-dimensional gameplay to solve challenging perspective, timing, and logic puzzles, along with utilizing dual focus to take advantage of items and tools that only exist in one world but can influence the other. The mixture of 2D and 3D in simultaneous environmental movement and storytelling has been given the moniker of 5D by developers Crescent Moon Games and Radical Forge, possibly marking yet another key point in the evolution of video games. Similar to other challenging platforming games, Screenbound pushes players to move and observe in unison and split their strategizing between the classic pixels of 2D and the vibrant realm of 3D.

It is worth noting that there has been unfortunately little in the way of updates on Screenbound since it was first announced in 2024, but the modern renaissance of platformers following the success of games like Astro Bot and Super Mario Bros. Wonder could offer a prime environment for Screenbound to finally cross the finish line and drop a release date. Audiences have already theorized that the unique 5D mechanics in Screenbound could be requiring more backend work, particularly in the seemingly complex coding, than anticipated, though this remains pure speculation. Without any official word from the development team, it remains unknown if Screenbound has fallen behind schedule or if everything behind the scenes is progressing as intended.
Even if Screenbound is facing complications in its development, it would be far from the first game to face such challenges. Even major AAA releases like The Last Guardian and Diablo 3 had fans worried for years that they had been canceled or were stuck in development hell, so the less than two years since Screenbound‘s initial reveal is not necessarily indicative of any major complications. Interested players can follow along for any official announcements on the status of Screenbound, including any word on a potential launch window, as well as other news on upcoming releases for Steam.
