STALKER 2 Officially Announces First Major Story DLC, Coming Summer 2026

GSC Game World has formally announced STALKER 2: Cost of Hope, the first major story expansion for its hit game. Promising dozens of hours’ worth of content, the DLC will debut across all versions of STALKER 2 in summer 2026.

The announcement did not arrive in a vacuum, as STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl had already launched with a season pass back in November 2024, bundling the promise of all future content, including two story expansions, with its $109.99 Ultimate Edition. Although the open-world FPS-RPG hybrid has received several substantial updates since then, GSC kept both of those two story expansions under wraps until today.

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl Reveals Free Story Expansion and It’s Launching Very Soon

GSC Game World announces a brand-new story content update for STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, adding quests, gear, and more completely free.

STALKER 2: Cost of Hope Announced with a Dramatic Trailer

The first major STALKER 2 story DLC, Cost of Hope, was officially announced moments ago, during the latest Xbox Partner Preview event. The March 26 showcase featured a dramatic two-minute trailer combining in-engine cutscenes with some gameplay glimpses. The video sets up a renewed conflict between STALKER 2‘s Duty and Freedom factions as the catalyst for Cost of Hope’s story. Based on the footage shown, the fragile peace between the Zone’s two largest groups appears set to collapse over the course of the expansion, sending players into the heart of the ensuing chaos.

While the Zone in the base game is already a sizable playground, Cost of Hope is set to expand it with two new regions in the northern part of the map: the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Iron Forest. The reveal trailer includes several segments likely recorded in the plant area, without revealing the exact circumstances that bring players there. Each region will feature its own hub and quests, as well as some additional “activities” that GSC is keeping under wraps for now. The expansion will also include new weapons and gear, the developer confirmed, without clarifying how many will be added.

STALKER 2: Cost of Hope Summary

  • Release window: summer 2026
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
  • 2 new regions: Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and Iron Forest

    • Each region comes with its own hub and quests
  • New weapons and gear
  • Non-linear story: player choices shape the narrative

Cost of Hope will unfold simultaneously with the base game’s story, GSC said. Once the expansion is downloaded and installed, the in-game PDA will notify Skif about a new quest that kicks off the DLC storyline. Like the rest of the game, Cost of Hope will feature an open-ended structure with choices that shape events and add replay value. GSC did not confirm whether choices from STALKER 2‘s main story will affect the expansion, but, given that it takes place in parallel, that appears unlikely.

STALKER 2: Cost of Hope Launches Summer 2026

Cost of Hope is targeting a summer 2026 release, with the very end of its reveal trailer confirming as much. Although STALKER 2 was a timed Xbox console exclusive that took a full extra year to reach the PlayStation 5 after debuting on the Series X/S and PC, its first major story expansion will have a fully multi-platform day-and-date launch. No pricing details have been provided by GSC. The price of the game’s Ultimate Edition upgrade may imply the expansion will retail for around $20, though season passes are often priced below the combined cost of their individual components. GSC has yet to confirm whether Cost of Hope will be sold separately.

GSC is framing Cost of Hope as the middle part of its “second trilogy,” which started with the STALKER 2 base game. The story of the trilogy is planned to conclude with another story expansion, which is still without a name or release window. Given that Cost of Hope is currently on course to debut nearly two years after STALKER 2, there is a chance that the game’s final expansion may not materialize before 2028. Although two years is a relatively long wait for a single-player DLC release, GSC is noting that Cost of Hope will include dozens of hours of gameplay, which would make it more comparable to a new game rather than a minor expansion.
