Fallout 76’s New Infestations Are a Big Deal for Co-Op Gameplay

Fallout 76 is mere days away from getting Infestations, a brand-new gameplay mechanic scheduled to drop in early June 2026. Positioned as a key part of Season 25, the upcoming activity is expected to have a significant and multi-faceted impact on Fallout 76 co-op gameplay.

Bethesda originally announced the Infestations update on April 9, introducing it as part of the Fallout 76 Public Test Server patch released that day. The update centers on a world activity in which various enemy factions can infest certain areas, giving players a chance to clear them in exchange for highly valuable rewards.

Bethesda Details Fallout 76: Infestations Update Ahead of Launch

In the immediate lead-up to the update’s June 2 launch, Bethesda shared a new video deep dive into Infestations and held a media event where members of the press could ask questions about the upcoming addition. In both cases, the studio emphasized that the new activity centers on “adventure and challenge,” identifying those as the two core pillars of Infestations. In practical terms, that means Infestations will cater to veteran players running Fallout 76 endgame builds, forcing them to do something they otherwise rarely have to do: cooperate.

How Infestations Fit into Fallout 76 Co-Op

The emphasis on cooperation is what makes Infestations different from most other Fallout 76 activities. Many longtime players generally have little difficulty clearing the game’s content on their own, but Infestations are designed to strongly discourage solo runs, to the point of making them almost impossible. The core system features different factions taking over randomly selected locations, culminating in a boss fight against a difficult foe protected by a swarm of minions. Finding an Infestation can be a team activity but does not have to be: one player only needs to encounter one, after which others can join with a single button press. This makes Infestations as accessible as Daily Ops while being much more difficult to clear.

Bethesda signaled more factions and Infestation locations could be added to Fallout 76 at a later date.

The higher risk comes with better rewards, as Infestation bosses offer a path toward Fallout 76 items with 4-Star Legendary Effects. This is meant to incentivize everyone from mid-level players to veterans, with Bethesda stressing that balance is its primary concern here; specifically, Infestations are not meant to replace raids, but offer a more open and organic co-op experience for groups of friends and strangers alike. Should the system work as intended, it could make everyday exploration feel more unpredictable and give players more frequent reasons to respond to one another while out and about.

More Co-Op Play Could Change Fallout 76 Meta

Looking at the bigger picture, Infestations can therefore be viewed as a major step toward making Fallout 76 more team-oriented. Following years of updates, Bethesda’s hit game still largely plays as a single-player experience where players only occasionally band together. Because consistent groups are rare, team-oriented builds such as medics are largely nonexistent, despite being mechanically possible. Should Infestations succeed in making co-op play more prevalent, they could also have an indirect effect on the game’s meta, prompting more players to experiment with builds meant to take advantage of group synergies.
