Nintendo has released a new update for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Switch and Switch 2. While it is only a small update, it should make Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker fans who use amiibo happy.
While Captain Toad first appeared in the original Super Mario Galaxy, the character made his playable debut in Super Mario 3D World, featuring in puzzle levels. This led to bigger and better things for the adventurous Toad, as he went on to star in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. The fully fledged game expanded on the levels from Super Mario 3D World, challenging players to collect Power Stars by changing the depth of the world around them to uncover secrets. After getting its start on the Wii U in 2014, the game was ported to the 3DS and Switch in 2018, expanding its reach. While some might have thought the puzzle-platformer was done receiving updates 11 years after its original release, that is not the case.
10 Best Nintendo Franchises That Deserve a Movie Adaptation, Ranked
After The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo franchises like Pikmin and Metroid deserve their shot on the big screen.
On March 25, Nintendo released a new update for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. This new patch moved the game to Version 1.4.2 and focused on amiibo. Specifically, the small update added support for the Captain Toad & Talking Flower amiibo. It is worth noting that this update is for both the Switch and Switch 2 consoles and coincides with the release of the new figurine featuring Captain Toad. In fact, Captain Toad & Talking Flower is part of a trio of Super Mario Bros. Wonder-themed amiibos. However, it appears that Captain Toad & Talking Flower is the only one compatible with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, according to the patch notes. By scanning this amiibo in the game on either the Switch or Switch 2, players can unlock in-game bonuses.

This amiibo update for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker comes following a couple of updates for the game in 2025. Most notably, Nintendo rolled out a larger patch last June, coinciding with the release of the Switch 2, that improved the experience for fans on the newer console. Taking advantage of the more powerful hardware, the Switch 2 update for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker included better image quality, HDR (High Dynamic Range) support, and GameShare functionality.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder Gets Switch 2 Edition Alongside New Amiibos
Interestingly, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is not the only first-party Nintendo game that received an update recently. In addition, Nintendo updated Super Mario Bros. Wonder to Version 1.2.0. on March 25, making several tweaks for the Switch 2 Edition. Known officially as Super Mario Bros. Wonder — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park, the new version of the game was released the following day on March 26, adding multiplayer attractions, new characters, and more. Furthermore, the Mario Wonder-themed amiibo also adds bonuses for players to take advantage of.
The launch of these new amiibo and the support for them in older games like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker shows that Nintendo still has interest in its line of collectibles. Besides the Super Mario Bros. Wonder amiibos, ones themed around Super Mario Galaxy and Kirby Air Riders are being released later this year. In addition, new Metroid figures were launched at the end of 2025.
It will be interesting to see what other older games could receive seemingly random updates from Nintendo in the weeks ahead. With more amiibo in the pipeline, there is the possibility that Nintendo could release updates to include support for these new figures. Regardless, the most recent amiibo-focused update for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker could offer a good excuse for fans to return to one of Nintendo’s more charming adventures from the 2010s.
