Avatar Legends Details Princess Azula’s Gameplay

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has just shared an in-depth breakdown of Princess Azula’s very unique gameplay style. Along with detailing Azula’s moveset, developer Gameplay Group International has confirmed that the Standard Edition of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game will retail for $29.99 when it launches on July 2 for PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

Avatar: The Last Airbender made its Nickelodeon debut in February 2005. In the 21 years since, the Avatar Legends franchise has received nine video game adaptations, the vast majority of which have been third-person action-adventure games with rather simple combat mechanics. Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game marks a bold departure from this franchise norm, promising to give fans an all-new 2D fighting game experience that features 12 iconic characters from the series, a variety of gameplay modes, and an array of unique mechanics.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game Shares Princess Azula Gameplay Breakdown

In the lead up to Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game‘s July 2 launch, developer Gameplay Group International seems to be drip-feeding gameplay breakdowns of each character on the game’s roster. Back in February, earthbender Toph got her own gameplay breakdown, and now it’s Princess Azula’s turn. For those who haven’t seen the animated series the fighting game is based on, Azula is the younger sister of Prince Zuko, daughter of Fire Lord Ozai, and the princess of the Fire Nation. Azula is an incredibly skilled firebender, evidenced by her ability to wield blue flames. These signature blue flames take center stage in Azula’s dual moveset in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game.

As explained by Gameplay Group International in a recent PlayStation Blog post, Princess Azula has two distinct gameplay toolkits in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. The first is Azula’s Focused Mode, which sees the princess using calm, calculated strikes. In this mode, Azula’s movements are more careful and her special abilities leave behind oil traps that can be easily ignited to catch opponents off guard.

The second is Azula’s Firelord Mode, which sees the firebender fully embrace the chaos of her associated element. In this mode, Azula’s movements become more erratic and her traps are traded out for an extended set of offensive moves, including a wall of flame that advances towards an opponent. While Azula’s dual movesets offer two very distinct ways to play, both focus around the fighter’s exceptional air mobility.

Sokka Plays Very Differently

At launch, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game will feature a roster of 12 characters. While many of these playable fighters are benders of some elemental variation, some are not. Sokka, for instance, relies on “wit, grit, and weapon hits,” as Gameplay Group International states. Unlike Princess Azula and most of the game’s roster, Sokka’s kit revolves around his unique ability to cancel most of his normal attacks directly into Flow moves, allowing players to quickly dodge an oncoming attack or reposition in the blink of an eye. This high level of mobility is Sokka’s primary advantage, though it comes at the cost of not being able to chain his normal attacks into C attacks. Without any form of bending on his side, Sokka must also rely on his arsenal of screen-accurate tools, such as his boomerang, his club, and his Meteorite Sword.

Fans will be able to play as Princess Azula and Sokka across several game modes, with Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game coming with an Arcade Mode, Story Mode, Training Mode, Online modes, Combo Trials mode, and a Character Lessons mode at launch. Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game will also include a Gallery Mode that features never-before-seen artwork from the franchise’s history.
