Bethesda Confirms Disappointing Fallout 76 News

Fallout 76 has no plans to add more out-of-map Expeditions, according to the game’s development team at Bethesda. Fallout 76 already features two Expeditions that players can embark on, along with previous map expansions via updates like Skyline Valley and Burning Springs. However, new Expeditions where players leave the main Fallout 76 map of Appalachia and explore a self-contained territory are seemingly off the table for the foreseeable future.

Despite a rocky launch back in 2018, Fallout 76 has maintained a dedicated player base thanks to its consistent stream of new content. Updates like The Ghoul Within breathed new life into the game by allowing Fallout 76 players to become a ghoul, and the upcoming CAMPanions update overhauling the pet system so that players can bring CAMP pets along with them around the Appalachian Wasteland. Some of the best Fallout 76 updates are the ones that added new Expedition content, but those may now be a thing of the past.

Fallout 76 Adding ‘CAMPanions’ As Roaming Pets

Fallout 76 introduces a new type of roaming pet creature with the CAMPanion system, featuring friendly creatures that follow players around.

Fallout 76 Has No Plans for More Expeditions

According to an interview with Insider Gaming, Fallout 76 creative director Jon Rush noted that the foundational issues with the Expeditions mechanic makes it unlikely that more will be added in the future. Part of the issue Rush notes with Fallout 76‘s Expeditions system is that it’s very limiting in what players are able to do within these out-of-map locations. Compared to Fallout 76‘s core map, where players can roam and participate in events as they please, Expeditions offer a very linear experience where players travel to the location, complete a mission, and return.

So far, Fallout 76 has featured two major Expeditions in its update history:

  • Expeditions: The Pitt — September 2022
  • Expeditions: Atlantic City — December 2023

The first of these Expeditions brought players back to The Pitt, the Fallout universe’s version of Pittsburgh from Fallout 3‘s iconic DLC of the same name. A year later, the second Fallout 76 Expedition took players to New Jersey via the Atlantic City Expedition, including access to the Pine Barrens and the local cryptid, the Jersey Devil.

Although there are still plenty of places within the established Fallout universe that would make sense for players to visit as an Expedition, it seems like the team is moving away from that type of content for now. Instead, Rush notes that there are plans in the works for more in-map expansions. Fallout 76 has hit the content jackpot in recent years by expanding Fallout 76‘s Appalachian Wasteland map to give players access to more areas without having to worry about committing to an Expedition.

The Skyline Valley update added the titular region to the southern part of the Fallout 76 map, and Burning Springs was added to the western side of the map, just across the river from Point Pleasant and its Mothman cult. While the lack of future Expeditions means Fallout 76 will largely have to stay contained to Appalachia, it also means that future content will be accessible directly from the game’s main map without the additional steps required to embark on an Expedition.
