The developers of Rec Room have announced that the game will be shutting down this year. While Rec Room had a good amount of popularity, its run will come to an end a decade after it got its start.
Rec Room has frequently been compared to titles like Roblox, as the game offered social experiences in a sandbox that allowed players to create their own rooms. VR games remain a niche subgenre, but between VR headset owners and those who accessed the game in a 2D format, like through Rec Room‘s Switch release, Rec Room gained 150 million players overall. However, these impressive numbers weren’t enough to save the game.
A Resident Evil Game Is Shutting Down Forever
Capcom announces an upcoming shutdown of a Resident Evil game less than three years following its original release on PC and consoles.
Rec Room Announces Permanent Shutdown
On March 30, 2026, Rec Room announced that the game would be winding down and completely closing on June 1. The team explained that while the game had indeed reached over 150 million players, with millions still playing per month, the studio was never able to figure out how to turn a profit on the game. As a result, they have been spending more on maintaining the title and running it than they’ve earned. Additionally, the team cited changes in the VR market, as well as the shifts in gaming overall, as part of the reason for their decision to shut down.
Gamers who have active Rec Room accounts will be able to continue playing until the day of shutdown, but those who have never played it before won’t get a chance to. Effective immediately, no new accounts can be created for the game, friends can’t be added, and the Rec Room+ subscription service has been closed to new subscribers. Those who currently have the membership will see it extended to the game’s shutdown. Partnered Creators can still cash out their tokens, and those who are owed Room Rewards from March will receive them in April. As a way of showing the team’s appreciation to the players, all first-party content available in the stores has been discounted by 80%, and some of the Rec Room+ subscriber features have been made available to everyone.
While fans and creators are likely sad to see the game shut down, Rec Room is also taking steps to give players a way of remembering their time in the game, and to preserve rooms created. Players can download any photos they took and get a “final report card” that serves as a memento of their time in the title. Users on the Steam PC version of the game will be able to download their rooms starting in one week from the announcement. The data can be used to rebuild the rooms elsewhere, like in the Unity game engine. However, users should make sure to do so before the game shuts down, as the data will become inaccessible after that.
Rec Room was enjoyed across a number of platforms, but never came to PS VR2, despite being available for the original PS VR. The developers of the game explained back in 2024 that they couldn’t justify the cost of creating the “non-trivial port” to PS VR2, even though they would have liked to. It might have been for the best, as the PS VR2 struggled to sell, with Sony cutting back production of the headset shortly after. Even if that hadn’t been the case, though, it seems that there was an inherent issue with making money from Rec Room that may have meant the game would have shut down even sooner had the developer poured the resources into making another VR port.
At one time, the future of Rec Room looked bright, with a number of investors pouring money into the project. Rec Room raised at least $294 million between 2016 and 2021, ultimately boosting the developer studio to a valuation of $3.5 billion, but the investments ceased past that point. In 2025, the developer began cutting jobs, with layoff waves in March and August, the latter of which cut half of the studio’s staff. Fans of Rec Room should consider popping in to say goodbye to the game before it becomes the latest game to shut down in 2026.
