Pokémon Champions Guide: All The New Legends: Z-A Mega Evolution Abilities

Pokémon Champions Guide: All The New Legends: Z-A Mega Evolution Abilities

Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduced just under 50 new Mega Evolutions across the RPG’s base game and the Mega Dimension DLC. Like Legends: Arceus before it, Z-A doesn’t include Abilities, or passive perks each Pokémon has that help it in battle and open up strategic possibilities. However, Pokémon Champions, the Switch/mobile battle simulator that will act as Pokémon’s new competitive platform moving forward, is coming out next week, and will bring each of these superpowered transformations to the competitive scene. As such, each of them are finally getting Abilities. Let’s run down the ones we know so far.

Mega Dragonite – Multiscale

Mega Dragonite is taking its base form’s hidden ability Multiscale. This reduces incoming damage when Dragonite is at full HP, giving it a bit more survivability when it’s first sent out into battle.

Mega Meganium – Mega Sol

Mega Meganinum is getting a brand new ability in Mega Sol, which allows it to attack and receive the perks of the harsh sunlight weather mechanic. This means it can use moves like Solar Beam without having to charge up for one turn and without also suffering from the drawbacks of sunlight like the increased damage from fire-type attacks.

Mega Feraligatr – Dragonize

Mega Feraligator is also getting its own ability with Dragonize, which turns all normal-type attacks into dragon-type moves and gives them a 20-percent power boost. Feraligatr turns into a water/dragon-type monster when it mega evolves which means it’s already getting an attack boost when it uses dragon-type attacks, so using powerful normal-type attacks has a ton of damage potential with all these boosts.

Mega Froslass – Snow Warning

Froslass can summon a snowstorm upon Mega Evolution thanks to Snow Warning, which isn’t a new ability, but it is new to the Froslass evolution line. This changes the weather on the battlefield for five turns, which increases the defense of ice-type Pokémon.

Mega Emboar – Mold Breaker

Unlike the other two Legends Z-A starters, Mega Emboar doesn’t get its own ability, but it still gets a decent one. Mold Breaker bypasses enemy abilities that might cause an attack to miss or be nullified.

Mega Chesnaught – Bulletproof

Mega Chesnaught takes its evolutionary line’s Hidden Ability Bulletproof and makes it the primary one. This nullifies “ball and bomb moves,” which is a bit situational, but can keep it safe from some heavy hitters like Aura Sphere and Beak Blast.

Mega Delphox – Levitate

This one’s not too surprising, as Delphox now flies on a witch’s broom when it Mega Evolves. Now it’s immune to ground-type attacks, which is good because that takes one of its weaknesses off the board as a fire-type Pokémon.

Mega Greninja – Protean

Mega Greninja’s ability Protean changes its base type to that of whatever attack it just used. This means it can open itself up to different weaknesses temporarily, but if you plan your moves right, you can likely nullify incoming attacks that might do a ton of damage.

Those are the ones we know so far, with the following still unaccounted for:

  • Mega Raichu Y
