Bethesda’s Starfield seems to keep resurfacing every now and then in an attempt to maintain relevance, but its upcoming splash on April 7, 2026 might be its biggest bet yet. To put it plainly, April 7 will be a very busy day for Bethesda as it celebrates a new console launch for the open-world sci-fi RPG, one of the most significant updates to the game yet, and a brand-new story-driven expansion that includes its own set of exclusive content. Needless to say, this could be the comeback Starfield has needed since its initial player counts dwindled and its public reception plateaued at a somewhat flexible middle ground.
Bethesda has neglected calling this massive day for the RPG “Starfield 2.0″—likely due to it not wanting to set expectations too high—but it’s hard not to see it that way. Its PS5 launch will undoubtedly attract a new audience of players, its Free Lanes update is making considerable feedback-inspired improvements to the base game, and its Terran Armada DLC looks like the kind of story and content that could make coming back to the game feel worthwhile again. The outcome of this apparent attempt at reviving Starfield will be revealed on April 7 and shortly after, of course, but there is still plenty here worth getting excited about before that day comes.
Starfield Producer Admits Bethesda Was “Surprised” Players Wanted More Freedom to Travel in Space
GameRant sat down with Starfield lead creative producer Tim Lamb to talk about the upcoming Free Lanes update and the why of it all.
Starfield Is Finally Coming to the PS5 on April 7, 2026
Starfield‘s upcoming PS5 launch was one of the worst-kept secrets ahead of its announcement, as there were far too many rumors and leaks to think it was simply fans getting excited about the possibility. Nevertheless, this represents one of the biggest moves the open-world RPG has ever made, simply because it marks the end of Starfield’s time as an Xbox console exclusive and, for the first time since launch, puts the game in front of an entirely new audience on PS5 alongside its biggest update and expansion to date.

While it’s impossible to determine just how many PS5 players have been waiting for Starfield, there are some early signs of its popularity that are hard to ignore. Shortly after Starfield‘s PS5 version was announced, it shot to the top of the PlayStation Store’s pre-order charts, with its Premium Edition taking the number one spot in the U.S. That alone suggests there is a sizable audience that either couldn’t play the game before or simply chose not to without a PS5 option. In other words, when Starfield launches on PS5 on April 7, it will be stepping into a sizable market that hasn’t been open to it for years.
Starfield’s Free Lanes Update Is Its Biggest Patch Yet
The RPG’s PS5 launch is certainly something worth talking about, but Starfield‘s Free Lanes update is arguably the standout event of Bethesda’s big day. The reason why is that the update may be the one thing that brings players back to the game who once swore it off for one reason or another. Free Lanes is already Starfield‘s most significant patch to date in its scope alone, but what makes it an even bigger deal is that everything it is adding to the game is based on frustrations many players have had with it since launch. In fact, its namesake and headlining feature is the ability to fly freely between planets within a star system—something that has been requested for years.
Everything Starfield’s Free Lanes Update Is Bringing to the Game
- INTERPLANETARY TRAVEL SYSTEM — Fly freely between planets within a star system.
- CRUISE MODE AUTOPILOT — Travel while managing ship, crew, and crafting.
- NEW SPACE ENCOUNTERS — More frequent dynamic events during travel.
- ADDITIONAL SPACE POIs — New locations and discoveries while exploring.
- X-TECH RESOURCE SYSTEM — New material for upgrading gear and ships.
- LEGENDARY EFFECT REROLLS — Re-roll and select weapon and gear perks.
- NEW QUALITY TIERS — Superior and Exceptional gear tiers added.
- SHIP OPTIMIZATION TERMINAL — Upgrade ship systems directly onboard.
- OUTPOST SHARED STORAGE — Access items across all outposts.
- DATABASE SYSTEM — Track planets, resources, and discoveries in one menu.
- OUTPOST PET COMPANION — New Milliewhale pet with customization.
- STARBORN ABILITY UPGRADES — Rank powers without New Game Plus.
- QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT DEVICE — Store and carry items between New Game Plus playthroughs.
- NEW LAND VEHICLE ADDED — Moon Jumper traversal option.
- NEW COLLECTIBLES SYSTEM — Stat-boosting collectible figures across the game.
- IMPROVED EXPLORATION FLOW — Fewer loading screens, smoother transitions.
In addition to the ability players will now have to fly freely between planets within a star system, Starfield‘s Free Lanes update is also putting new space encounters into that mix, fresh points of interest for players to discover, and new dynamic encounters that will occur during the player’s travel time in space. A new resource called X-Tech will also allow players to upgrade their gear and ships even further in Starfield, higher gear tiers have been implemented to let players craft and acquire even better equipment, the new Moon Jumper land vehicle and Milliewhale outpost pet will be obtainable, and stat-boosting action figures similar to Fallout‘s Bobbleheads will be discoverable once the update arrives.
That’s not all, though, as Free Lanes is adding a hefty list of quality-of-life improvements to the game as well. With the update, players will be able to upgrade their ship while they’re onboard, and a new Database system will allow them to track discovered resources across star systems and even fast-travel to those locations instantly. Significant enhancements have also been made to Starfield‘s New Game Plus mode, like the ability to transfer items between playthroughs using the new Quantum Entanglement device and upgrade Starborn powers without rediscovering artifacts. Finally, players will now be given shared storage between their outposts, and the game overall will have fewer loading screens and smoother transitions.
Starfield’s Terran Armada DLC Brings New Story Content and Gameplay to the Base Game
Finally, Starfield‘s Terran Armada DLC will be arriving on April 7 alongside Free Lanes and the game’s PS5 launch. Unlike Shattered Space, which largely focused on a single location, Starfield‘s Terran Armada DLC is taking a much broader approach by introducing a new faction. The Terran Armada itself is positioned as a major new threat, made up of a technologically advanced military force backed by robotic soldiers and a clear goal of unifying humanity under one authority. That setup alone makes Terran Armada out to be something that can actively influence multiple systems, encounters, and the overall feel of Starfield‘s world.
Everything Starfield’s Terran Armada DLC Is Bringing to the Game
- NEW STORY AND FACTION — Narrative centered on the Terran Armada faction.
- INCURSION EVENT SYSTEM — Repeatable combat events that can even interrupt fast travel.
- NEW ROBOT COMPANION — Recruitable Terran-linked ally.
- NEW SHIP PARTS — Terran-themed ship modules and builds.
- NEW WEAPONS AND GEAR — Expanded combat equipment.
- PLAYER HOUSING OPTION — New high-end apartment unlock.
That actually carries over into how players will directly engage with the DLC as well, with Terran Armada introducing new Incursion events that can take over locations across space and on planets, forcing players into combat scenarios that disrupt normal travel and exploration in Starfield. These encounters aren’t just one-off missions either, as they can be revisited for high-level gear, new resources like X-Tech, and additional rewards tied to the expansion. Along with that, the DLC brings new quests, enemies, customization options, and even a companion tied to the faction, so there is far more than a story going on here.
So, clearly, April 7 isn’t just another update for Starfield, but something that feels more like Bethesda finally putting all of its pieces on the table at once. The PS5 launch opens the door to an entirely new audience, the Free Lanes update tackles some of Starfield‘s most talked-about issues, and the Terran Armada DLC aims to give players a reason to actually stay once they come back. It may not be labeled as a full reset, but it’s hard to look at everything arriving on the same day and not see it as a potential major turning point for a sci-fi RPG that has been fighting an uphill battle for years.
