Black Ops 7’s Latest Zombies Announcement is an Even Bigger Headscratcher Than Paradox Junction

Black Ops 7’s Latest Zombies Announcement is an Even Bigger Headscratcher Than Paradox Junction

Following the backlash to Paradox Junction in Season 2, which was yet another version of Nuketown, Treyarch is striving to reassure Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies fans that the game still has a lot of content to look forward to. And, to Treyarch’s credit, the early looks at Season 3 Reloaded’s Totenreich map and the OP Legacy Weapons that are being added to the Mystery Box alongside it do seem exciting. Zombie Battle is a fun Grief-like experience to play with friends and randoms, too, and Ashwood is an engaging Survival map because of the fog gimmick from Ashes of the Damned being re-used for its ground level. However, the problem with Ashwood isn’t the map itself, but that it’s the last of its kind.

Treyarch recently announced during the Dev Talk for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Season 3 that Ashwood would be the final survival map taken from Ashes of the Damned, a decision that instantly resulted in confused community members making posts on social media. Whether it’s regular Redditors like MarcelloJulio to known CoD leakers like @TheGhostOfHope, it’s clear that this choice caught the community off guard. Since launch, many felt that Blackwater Lake would be an ideal survival map, but apparently, it won’t be one at all. While Paradox Junction makes sense from the standpoint of saving time and resources, figuring out why Blackwater Lake was left on the cutting room floor is a bit more difficult.

Paradox Junction’s creation also allows for a Nuketown Survival map, which hasn’t just been leaked, but has seemingly been confirmed by the addition of a round 10 emblem to the main menu.

How to Get the Classified Weapon Camo in Black Ops 7 & Warzone

Call of Duty: Warzone players can get the new Classified Weapon Camo by completing a specific challenge. Here is how to unlock it, fast.

Why Might a Blackwater Lake Survival Map Have Been Skipped Over?

Blackwater Lake seemingly had everything going for it as a POI; training spots on the ice and driveway, a cramped main cabin for hectic close quarters encounters, room to add a Wunderfizz and Pack-a-Punch machine, and existing locations for TEDD Trials/Ammo/the Mystery Box. There are a few theories for why it won’t be happening, with the most prominent being:

  1. The surprise return of Black Ops Cold War’s Onslaught mode
  2. Blackwater Lack’s open areas making it too easy to survive on
  3. Treyarch feeling that the upcoming round-based maps offer more interesting Survival arenas

The first theory doesn’t have any evidence to support it, and given that Onslaught wasn’t a huge hit, it does seem rather unlikely for it to prove true. Still, in a world where Treyarch does suddenly revive the mode, which saw players slaying small groups of undead as they escorted a Dark Aether orb across multiplayer maps, then it would explain the lack of Blackwater Lake. This is because the multiplayer map Homestead is essentially a bigger version of the Blackwater playspace, so Treyarch would be doubling down on the same locale instead of giving fans more bang for their buck. The second theory is similarly questionable. Sure, Blackwater Lake is a go-to high round spot on Ashes of the Damned, but easy trains exist on the other Survival maps plucked from Ashes, too. And, if Treyarch wanted to up the difficulty, it could always just feature the cabin interior, leading to a cramped and challenging map like Groesten Haus from WW2 Zombies.

This leaves the third theory, and it’s one that would ultimately be a good sign for Black Ops 7’s future. With 3 Seasons seemingly remaining for Black Ops 7 Zombies support (S3 Reloaded, S4 Reloaded, and S5 Reloaded contain the remaining round-based maps), there are naturally only going to be a few more slots left for Survival arenas. Instead of spending those slots on Ashes, a map that’s already been heavily represented within Survival, Treyarch may be wanting to ensure that some cool self-contained areas from the next three full maps come to the mode instead. Perhaps there’s something awesome and unexpected, like Astra Malorum’s Mars location, that would blow Blackwater Lake out of the water. Totenreich is clearly going to be a massive map, too, so surely it will be ripe for the picking when it comes for Survival maps (the Lighthouse already seems like a standout contender, for example).

That said, hopefully Treyarch sees the demand for Blackwater Lake and considers tossing it in as a bonus before ending support for Black Ops 7 Zombies and going all in on its next Call of Duty game. It could lead to a double Survival map drop like Season 1 had, or maybe it could be an extra Super Easter egg reward. Clearly, there’s interest there, perhaps more than Treyarch had initially realized. With players wishing Blackwater had been a dedicated map instead of locations like Zarya Cosmodrome, leaving it for last and then moving on from Ashes before it could be released was clearly a misfire. Whether this complaint is addressed remains to be seen, but on the bright side, Treyarch suddenly moving on from Ashes does suggest it’s cooking up some fun Survival maps from the remaining releases.
