A Second GTA 6 Release is Basically Confirmed for 2027

While gamers the world over are still waiting for Grand Theft Auto 6 Trailer 3, the bevy of details that went live alongside the price, pre-orders, and various editions have at least satisfied some fans for now. One of the most intriguing details is how insistent Rockstar Games is that Grand Theft Auto 6 is a single-player game.

Rumors suggest that a physical disc release may happen in December 2026, with the current pre-orders lacking a disc for GTA 6 to prevent leaks at release (says rumors). That could be the case, but whether that happens in December or in 2027, that’s still part of that single-player release, it would seem. As such, it’s worth noting that the insistence that GTA 6 is a single-player game implies that a second release for GTA 6 Online may happen in 2027. That’s as dangerous, if not more so, than the original November release date for video games.

To be clear, Rockstar has not yet officially announced a new iteration of Grand Theft Auto Online for the upcoming release of GTA 6, but it’s just common sense. It’s not even a “worst kept secret” situation; it’s going to happen, it’s just a matter of when. GTA Online has made so much money for Rockstar that a chance to reinvest in that, expand it, and make even more money is not going to be passed up. GTA 6 Online won’t release two weeks after because of the timing (that would put it into December, a time when most devs and studios close for holidays) and ongoing support for the single-player release. But whether it’s early 2027 or late 2027, it’s easy to tell that a GTA 6 Online release is coming sometime after GTA 6 and most likely in 2027 after Rockstar Games devs return to the office.

GTA 6 is already predicted to be an industry-defining release, a seminal moment for all video games everywhere, but the single-player has clear limits. Players will discover stuff for years, for sure, but there can only be so many activities, so many quests, etc., in GTA 6’s story. It will be beaten by folks by the end of the year. And yet, the 1-2 punch is offering GTA Online sometime after to pick up those folks too. A second GTA release date, however, will have the same impact as the first one did—GTA 6 is the reason so many games are releasing one after the other in September. It’s the reason that November and December are largely barren, January too. Whatever the release date for GTA 6 Online is, and when players learn it is a second question, but it’s going to move release dates.

Imagine, then, the chaos of GTA 6 Online being announced for a February 2027 release date. Fable penned in a 2027 release date to avoid GTA 6, with games like Persona 4 Revival and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis joining it. Other games may eye that month too, with God of War Laufey said to release between February and March. All of that would be out the window instantly, or at the very least, each release would be exponentially harmed. GTA 6 is a single-player game and can only offer so much content as a result; GTA 6 Online is a different beast.
