Multiple TikTok videos of women saying their significant others aren’t going to be allowed to play Grand Theft Auto 6 are going viral. Grand Theft Auto 6 is the most highly-anticipated video game release of all time, reaching unprecedented levels of hype. Any concern that it wouldn’t live up to expectations went completely out the window after the recent jaw-dropping Extended Look was released and gave fans about 27 minutes of gameplay to check out.
The GTA 6 Extended Look highlighted the relationship between dual protagonists Jason and Lucia, and how they interact with each other. Based on what was shown in the Extended Look, it appears as though Jason and Lucia’s romantic relationship is one that players can explore or sabotage at their leisure. For example, in the Extended Look, Jason is given the option to tell Lucia to “Hurry Up” when she’s in the bathroom getting ready, which would have likely resulted in some friction between the two. Early previews suggest the depth of Jason and Lucia’s relationship is at least partly in the hands of the players and their choices, but regardless, their relationship does seem to be the core of GTA 6. Unfortunately, the Jason and Lucia relationship, among other controversial content in the game, is something some TikTokers have taken issue with.
Viral TikTok Trend Has Women Speaking Out Against GTA 6
One of the most popular examples is a TikTok uploaded by content creator Shelby Haas where she states, “In absolutely no human way is my fiancé playing GTA 6.” In the video, Haas lists off reasons why her fiancé isn’t allowed to play the game, like how Lucia can apparently “get mad” if players don’t text her back and how players can take the characters on dates. Haas also points to GTA 6‘s leaked nudist colony and strip clubs as other reasons why her fiancé won’t be playing the game. Haas goes on to encourage viewers to not let their significant others play the game either. “Do not let your boyfriend or fiancé or husband play GTA 6. Absolutely not.” The video has over 815,000 views at the time of this writing with over 94,000 likes and over 1,000 comments, with more added with reach refresh.
Haas ends the video with, “I think the entire male population is lowkey going way downhill right now because number one, why are you in love with pixels? I feel like this is starting a whole Black Mirror type thing,” and concludes by referencing the recent viral videos of men mispronouncing words. Many of the comments on the video seem to agree with Haas, though there are others that push back and point out that GTA 6 is just a video game.
Haas isn’t the only TikToker that has taken aim at GTA 6. Another video, by a TikToker named Trinity, starts with her saying, “If my man plays GTA, he’s not my man anymore.” Another video, by CaitlynandTahir, shows a girlfriend confronting her boyfriend about the content in GTA 6, while another by Lisabisa echoes similar sentiments. Some of the similar videos online seem to be joking or making fun of the trend, but others seem to be completely serious about not letting their boyfriends, husbands, etc. play GTA 6 because of the content in the game.
A misunderstanding perpetuated by multiple videos is that the Jason and Lucia relationship is the “main goal” of the game. On the contrary, based on what’s been claimed by early previews, the extent players pursue the romantic side of the relationship seems to be up to them. A big selling point of the GTA franchise is player freedom, after all. Some of the videos hitting social media don’t seem to have much of a true grasp on what GTA 6 really is, or that Lucia is one of the playable characters herself alongside Jason. In any case, it will be interesting to see how the internet continues to react to the game, especially as we get closer to the long-awaited November 19 release date.
