The next God of War has been on a lot of gamers’ minds lately. Developer Santa Monica Studio has been really quiet about what the team has planned next, but leaks and rumors have been making some bold claims about God of War‘s future. Rumors about an Egyptian God of War game or an Atreus spin-off have been circulating for a long time, but some of the most recent leaks have actually been pointing to a potential chapter focused on Faye.

Kratos’ deceased wife may not be present in the Norse saga’s main story, but she’s an essential puzzle piece to the overall narrative. She’s been shown in flashbacks, but the character has never been playable. That all might change, though. The past few months have been filled with Faye God of War game rumors, and they point to a game that has the potential to be a fascinating new storyline for the series.

5 God Of War Games With The Best Combat, Ranked

While narrative has taken center stage in recent years, the God of War franchise has always been about combat at its core.

The Rumored Faye-Led God of War Game Might Shake Up the Franchise’s Formula

Before going any further, it’s important to note that pretty much all of these leaks and rumors come from a variety of sources across social media. Some are known leakers, like NateTheHate, while other rumors have been kick-started based on the LinkedIn profiles of Santa Monica Studio devs. Even though there are a lot of people discussing the possible new God of War game, everything claimed in these leaks should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Faye Could Bring Even More Action

Every God of War game is already pretty action-packed, but one of the most interesting details in these leaks is the claim that Faye’s story will be even more focused on action. According to NateTheHate, the game’s combat could even be inspired by Devil May Cry. That could be a really exciting match-up, if true. God of War‘s Norse saga has made it clear that Faye is really powerful, but gamers haven’t got to experience her strength firsthand.

Faye, Tyr, and Merlin Walk Into a Bar…

In addition to Faye, Tyr could return in the rumored God of War spin-off as a second protagonist. Tyr is also someone that the Norse saga has merely scratched the surface with, so getting to see him and Faye fighting side by side would be a compelling road for the series to go down. He and Faye might not be alone, either. There have been further claims that Merlin might be part of the story as a sentient sword, which sounds an awful lot like Atreus’ sword Ingrid in Ragnarok. If Merlin really does take the shape of a sword, it hopefully doesn’t feel too much like recycled material.

Another rumored companion is a “gelatinous cube” that hasn’t been given an actual name yet. It’s hard to say exactly what role this kind of abstract character would be, but it’s possible it could be filling Mimir’s role as a quippy helper.

New Pantheons Might Be Expanding God of War’s Universe

There has been a lot of speculation when it comes to which pantheon God of War will explore next. Ragnarok‘s ending made it feel like Santa Monica Studio wanted to begin moving away from the Norse pantheon. Its Valhalla DLC gave even more weight to these theories. Ragnarok‘s Valhalla Tyr fights sparked rumors, since he fights with several weapons that aren’t part of Norse history. He uses a Norse-like shield and spear, but he also wields a Japanese katana, a Mesoamerican macuahuitl, and an Egyptian khopesh.

The rumors have specifically mentioned Asian and Mesoamerican pantheons, which leaves the possibility of the Egyptian gods one of the most intriguing questions that plenty of fans are hoping to have answered soon. There have been hopes for an Egyptian God of War game for a long time now, and it’s possible that a Faye game could plant the seed that helps that grow into a reality. The leaks may have focused on naming Asian and Mesoamerican mythologies, but it would be strange for Santa Monica Studios to include an Egyptian weapon if it had no intention of actually using it.

Sony State of Play Expectations and the Rumored Release Date

  • Sony’s next State of Play showcase goes live on June 2.
  • The broadcast will air at 2PM PT/ 5PM ET.

The recent announcement of the next Sony State of Play has a lot of gamers anticipating some big announcements. If there was ever a perfect place for Sony and Santa Monica Studio to announce the God of War Faye spin-off, it would be this State of Play. If so, it would more than likely be saved as the showcase’s final announcement. God of War is one of Sony’s biggest IPs, so it would definitely be deserving of a grand finale. With the State of Play right around the corner, possibly getting answers to the questions that these leaks have raised is already generating solid hype. Only time will tell if the event meets these expectations, though.

The Next God of War Won’t Come Out This Year, But It Might Be Sooner Than Expected

Once again, this goes back to NateTheHate. The leaker has claimed that Santa Monica Studio will announce the game this year, and it will come out during the first half of next year. Once again, it’s important to keep expectations in check and be skeptical about claims that are this bold. An announcement at the June State of Play would be perfect timing to kickstart the excitement for an early/mid 2027 release. Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Barlog has even made some cheeky remarks about NateTheHate’s round of leaks.

Right now, all fans can do is wait and see what June’s State of Play has in store. If this Faye spin-off isn’t revealed at the showcase, then the God of War rumors will simply persist. Thankfully, the State of Play is just a few days away now, so the wait for answers is almost over.
