A new rumor suggests that the PlayStation-exclusive Infamous franchise could be set to make a comeback. It has been over 12 years since the last Infamous game was released by developer Sucker Punch Productions, but it appears a return could be on the horizon.

The Infamous series started in 2009, with two sequels arriving in 2011 and 2014, respectively. All three were well-received by fans and critics alike. It wasn’t a genuine critical darling, but came to be regarded as a solid PlayStation-exclusive franchise. The most recent game in the series, Infamous Second Son, was one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 exclusives. However, despite this success, it remains the last entry in the franchise over 12 years later.

PlayStation is Officially Asking PS4 Players to Upgrade to PS5

Sony is officially suggesting that some players still using the PS4 should consider upgrading to the PS5, ahead of a big game release in 2026.

Infamous Might Be Making a Comeback After Over a Decade

In a recent episode of the VGC Podcast, Jordan Middler revealed that PlayStation could be reviving the Infamous franchise in the future. “There is a groundswell of people that want Infamous,” Middler explained. “I’m under the impression that there is an Infamous thing happening somewhere else in PlayStation at the minute, not tied to them [Sucker Punch Productions].” 12 years is a long time for any PlayStation-exclusive franchise to remain dormant, especially one that has historically been a strong seller for Sony. Gamers have had time to miss Infamous, meaning it could be the perfect time for it to make a return.

An interesting element here is that it seems any potential Infamous revival would not be tied to Sucker Punch Productions, which ultimately makes a lot of sense. In the years since moving on from Infamous, the studio has gone on to create the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei, finding great success with both. Focusing on that franchise going forward feels far more likely than returning to Infamous, which could lead to speculation about which studio would be handling a potential revival.

As with any rumor, this should obviously be taken with a grain of salt. The existence or the nature of the project has not been revealed by Sony, so it should be treated as a rumor until it has anything official to share. There was no indication from Middler on when a potential announcement could arrive, either, meaning fans could still be in for a long wait for a new Infamous title.

Interestingly, Sucker Punch Productions Creative Director Nate Fox revealed last year that he’d love to revisit Infamous in the future, which was the first indication that a new game in the series could be in the works. However, with this latest report suggesting that Sucker Punch wouldn’t be involved in any potential title, this, in hindsight, seems more like a hopeful comment from Fox than any real hint for fans to latch onto.
