A recent Switch 2 leak combined with Nintendo’s established pattern suggests that fans will be treated to a big Direct presentation in September. Nintendo’s Direct presentations are exciting showcases that feature upcoming Switch 2 games for fans to look forward to, with some offering a general look at future titles and others focusing on specific games.
Nintendo’s last general Direct took place in June, which happens nearly every year, and primarily focused on Switch 2 games releasing in the second half of 2026. The Direct ended with the reveal of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, which was actually leaked ahead of time. Nintendo has since hosted a couple of game-specific Directs, with a Splatoon Raiders Direct at the end of June and a Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Direct at the beginning of August. Nintendo fans are no doubt wondering when the next Direct will be, and if history is anything to go by, chances are it will take place at some point within the first couple weeks of September.
Nintendo Usually Hosts Directs in September
Nintendo has a long history of hosting Directs in the first two weeks of September, and has done so nearly every year, with a few exceptions. Nintendo skipped 2024 and 2015 (and the first Direct took place in October 2011), but otherwise a Direct of some description, and sometimes multiple, has happened in September each and every year. Considering this, it would be a surprise if Nintendo didn’t have a Direct in the first half of September. Combine this pattern with a recent leak and a September 2026 Nintendo Direct seems even more likely.
A Diablo 4 Nintendo Switch 2 port was recently leaked, with it supposedly releasing on either September 15 or September 18. Nintendo has featured Blizzard-published games in its Direct presentations before, and something like a Diablo 4 Switch 2 port would definitely fit the bill. With the release date supposedly so soon, it wouldn’t be out of the question for the game to be a shadow drop on the platform. However, there’s another event in September that might be where the Diablo 4 Switch 2 port is announced instead.
BlizzCon 2026 is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13. It’s entirely possible that the leaked Diablo 4 Switch 2 port will be announced at that event instead, so fans should keep that in mind. But even if the Diablo 4 Switch 2 version leak is more evidence of a BlizzCon announcement than a Nintendo Direct, the established pattern of Directs in September still means that one is likely to take place.
As for what that Direct will entail, that remains to be seen. One rumor is that a Zelda-focused Nintendo Direct is on the horizon, which would make sense as we’ve seen next to nothing about the Ocarina of Time remake and Nintendo hasn’t really made any announcements relating to the franchise’s 40th anniversary. If a Zelda Direct does happen, fans will no doubt have their fingers crossed for news on the long-awaited Switch ports of Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD along with the inevitable OoT gameplay reveal. And maybe the first trailer for the movie, too.
