Analyst Predicts Super-Expensive PS6 and Next-Gen Xbox Will Be the End of Console Gaming

A wave of concern regarding the future of console gaming could be hitting consumers, as rising PlayStation console prices, component supply issues, and the push for AI continues to reshape the market. Some analysts now believe that the next generation of hardware, including Sony’s next PlayStation and Microsoft’s Project Helix, could push pricing into territory that fundamentally changes how gamers play.

Consoles have historically walked a line between performance and affordability, offering a relatively accessible entry point compared to high-end gaming PCs. But if that balance begins to disappear, the traditional console model may not hold in the same way it has for decades. Sony recently increased the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles, adding fuel to those concerns. In previous console generations, it was more common for the cost of console hardware to decrease, but macroeconomic factors like RAM component availability, tariffs, and inflation are having the opposite impact this time around. Rather than keeping entry costs low to maximize adoption, console providers like Sony may be preparing players for a future where higher upfront costs are expected.

PS6 Price Predicted to Be $1,000 or More

Following the news of price increases for current-gen PlayStation consoles, new reports suggest that the PS6 could cost even more than anticipated.

Industry Analyst Suggests the Next PlayStation Could Push Gamers Away From Hardware

In a recent episode of his Pachter Factor podcast, video game industry analyst Michael Pachter addressed that possibility directly. He warned that component costs driven by AI will likely lead to even more console price hikes. “I think that console prices are going to keep going up as long as demand for the components goes up for other reasons, so AI,” he said. Pachter went on to say that he fully anticipates Sony’s next console to have a launch price of $1,000, and that its price tag will likely impact console adoption rates.

“$1,000 for PS6. Yep. That’s why we’re going to buy fewer of them. Absolutely going to happen. So higher prices are going to destroy the market. I agree with that,” Pachter said.

Both the higher price of Sony’s consoles and lower adoption rates could potentially change how people play video games. Pachter suggested that the industry could shift from at-home hardware to a more Cloud-focused gaming environment. Rather than investing in the next console generation, players could start streaming games instead, which could lower the barrier of entry for consumers. It’s a sentiment that’s been shared by video game industry analyst and Executive Director of Games at Circana Mat Piscatella. “We’re not seeing a lot of people subscribing to play on cloud right now. Now, that could change if consoles become $1,500 because of the component shortage and all that,” Piscatella told GameRant.

Piscatella did note that cloud gaming hasn’t taken off in the US like it has in other parts of the world, but he suggested that the AI data centers, which are the primary driving force behind the RAM scarcity, could eventually be repurposed to support cloud gaming. He also mentioned that the internet infrastructure in the US isn’t really ideal for cloud gaming in its current state.

While cloud gaming still faces limitations, including latency, bandwidth requirements, and questions around ownership, cloud gaming could become increasingly popular in the future, and provide a way to sidestep the rising hardware costs. Still, current consumer behavior suggests that higher prices are not necessarily slowing demand, at least not yet. There are numerous posts on Reddit from consumers like these: Just panic bought my PS5 Pro and Decided to upgrade to the pro before the price hike. That sense of urgency, or fear of missing out, could be a tactic by Sony. It’s important for consumers to know their budgets and not to overspend from fear of future price increases.

If consoles continue trending toward luxury pricing, the audience may narrow to those willing and able to absorb higher costs. That could leave others turning to alternative platforms, whether that’s mobile, PC, or Cloud streaming. While consoles are unlikely to disappear overnight, analysts like Pachter suggest their adoption rates could change dramatically, with the next generation potentially marking a turning point for how players access and experience games.
