As Fable Is Rumored To Be Delayed, Let's Read Too Much Into This Social Media Change

One of the main social media accounts for the Fable reboot is no longer telling fans they can look forward to playing the game in 2026. This development came after a report said the game had been delayed internally and might not release this year as expected.

Since the Fable reboot had its proper unveiling in January, the game’s X account had been engaging with fans on a regular basis, usually signing off with something like, “We’re excited to welcome you to Albion in Autumn 2026!”

Those kinds of messages stopped after April 13, however. The last message from the Fable X account to include mention of a 2026 release came on the morning of Monday, April 13.

On April 3, reporter Jeff Grubb said Microsoft had delayed Fable internally, and with the team keen to stay out of the blast radius of GTA 6 (releasing November 19), that would make Fable a “prime candidate” to possibly slip to 2027.

Following this report, the Fable account on X posted at least three times to say Fable was coming in Fall 2026 prior to the last post mentioning a 2026 date on April 13. The account has engaged with fans since then, but none of the messages have included mention of a 2026 release for the new Fable.

There is no confirmed Fable reboot delay

These signs on social media definitely do not mean that the Fable reboot has shifted dates beyond Fall 2026. Grubb, for his part, said Microsoft might delay the game to December 2026, for example, so if there is a delay, it might not be to 2027. The Fable account may have stopped posting about a 2026 date for Fable for any number of different reasons that have nothing to do with a possible delay.

Also of note is that the Fable account’s pinned post has not changed in months, and remains the same post from January where the Fall 2026 date was announced. Additionally, we don’t know if people from developer Playground or publisher Microsoft are running the Fable account. It’s not uncommon for major brands to hire out social media work to agencies and other outside help, for example.

GameSpot has contacted Microsoft in an attempt to get more details on the social media activity and to confirm the status of the game’s release timing.

Avoiding GTA 6

While a delay for the Fable reboot is unconfirmed, we do know that many developers are going to try to avoid launching their games near GTA 6. The CEO of Helldivers studio Arrowhead said the event that will be GTA 6’s launch will “blot out the sun in a way unimaginable for everyone else.” More recently, industry veteran Glen Schofield said developers “don’t want to be near” GTA 6 when it comes to launching their own games. Schofield knows a thing or two about launching big games that take up money and attention, as he ran Call of Duty studio Sledgehammer Games with Michael Condrey for years.

Not every studio is afraid of GTA 6, however, as Devolver has said in the past that it wants to release a game on the same day as GTA 6, though the company may not actually be serious.

Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, said the launch of GTA 6 does not scare him as an executive at a competitive company because GTA 6 is such a big game that it will draw people to gaming, and a company like Ubisoft could benefit from that. “What we see, generally, when GTA is coming, is that more people come to play. So generally it’s positive on the overall market,” Guillemot said.

The Fable reboot is one of two new games from Playground coming this year, following Forza Horizon 6 in May. The RPG will be very British, and pulls inspiration from the Ricky Gervais TV show The Office. Fable is also Playground’s first non-Forza Horizon game it’s ever made. The game has been in development for years now, with Playground taking over stewardship of the Fable franchise in general after Microsoft closed original developer Lionhead.

In addition to Xbox and PC, the new Fable game is coming to PS5, marking the franchise’s debut on a Sony platform. The franchise’s original creator, Peter Molyneux, is not involved with the Fable reboot and has said the game’s world looks to have an “antiseptic” feel to it.

If Microsoft pushes Fable to 2027, the company would still have a number of heavy-hitters coming this year, including Forza Horizon 6, Halo: Campaign Evolved, and Gears of War: E-Day.
