Assassin's Creed Black Flag Remaster/Remake Basically Confirmed

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Remaster/Remake Basically Confirmed

Ubisoft has published a “brand update” for the Assassin’s Creed series, covering the latest developments on the multiple upcoming games and the live-action TV show for Netflix. Included in the breakdown was an image for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Resynced, and it’s basically confirmation that a remaster/remake of Black Flag is happening, as has been rumored.

This is coming not long after Ubisoft installed new leadership for the Assassin’s Creed franchise at Vantage Studios, and after we learned that Ubisoft veteran Clint Hocking had left Ubisoft and is no longer the top boss on one of the most anticipated upcoming Assassin’s Creed games, Hexe.

Ubisoft’s Jean Guesdon, the head of content for Assassin’s Creed, delivered the updates today. Here’s all the key info you need to know about each game and project in the works.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows

The game is coming up on its first anniversary, and Guesdon thanked fans for supporting the game throughout its multiple delays and controversies. The game’s success helped lift the Assassin’s Creed brand overall in 2025, Ubisoft reported.

Looking ahead, Ubisoft said Shadows is now moving into the “final phase of support.” This will mean “smaller, less frequent” updates for the game, but also “a few surprises.”

Codename Hexe

Codename Hexe is described as a “unique, darker, narrative-driven” Assassin’s Creed game that takes place in a “pivotal moment in history.” That’s all we know for now, but Guesdon said the game remains in development at Ubisoft Montreal and that he is taking over for Hocking as creative director.

Don’t expect much news or updates on Hexe anytime soon, though.

“We are taking the time to deliver on its ambitious vision, which means we’ll be quiet for a while longer, but we love seeing all the enthusiasm happening on our channels and can’t wait to unveil more when the time is right,” he said.

Codename Invictus

The Assassin’s Creed multiplayer PvP game, Codename Invictus, is in the works alongside Hexe at Ubisoft Montreal, with a team of For Honor veterans leading the development.

Guesdon said there is a “lot of curiosity” about Invictus, saying “it’s a new approach to multiplayer in the franchise, but it isn’t quite what the rumors have suggested.”

He added: “With player feedback at the heart of our approach, we’re exploring ways to bring the community in earlier so we can shape the experience together. The team is incredibly passionate about what they’re building, and their work reflects our broader goal of offering a wider variety of experiences within the Assassin’s Creed universe.”

Assassin’s Creed Jade and others

Beyond Hexe and Invictus, Guesdon said Ubisoft has “several” other Assassin’s Creed games in the works today “all at different stages of development.” One of them is the mobile game Assassin’s Creed Jade. Another Assassin’s Creed game could involve co-op. Guesdon said, “We’re also still looking into bringing co-op back to Assassin’s Creed, a detail we know didn’t go unnoticed.”

Additionally, Guesdon confirmed that Ubisoft “chose to pivot away” from a new Assassin’s Creed game that was “early” in development. He didn’t reveal anything more, but said the team learned lessons in that process that are “already helping shape our approach going forward.”

“What matters most to us is giving each project the time it deserves and releasing them when they are ready.”

This could be a reference to Ubisoft’s recent announcement that it had canceled six games, but did not name them outright.

What about the rumored Black Flag remake/remaster?

Evidence for such a game has been leaking all over the place. In the blog post announcing all of these new updates was an image of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag: Resycned, which is the rumored name of the supposed remake/remaster.

“Speculation around Assassin’s Creed is not new, but it’s worth repeating: ‘Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.’ Well, except in this case, some whispers have a little more wind in their sails. Keep your spyglass on the horizon,” Guesdon said, referencing the Black Flag rumors.

It has been speculated that the rumored Black Flag remake/remaster was one of the seven games that Ubisoft delayed earlier this year.

Older Assassin’s Creed games

Older Assassin’s Creed games still sell, and Guesdon said Ubisoft understands “how much those titles mean to many of you.” Related to this, Guesdon confirmed that a free 60fps patch for Assassin’s Creed Unity will be released on March 5 for PS5 and Xbox One (there was no mention of Assassin’s Creed Series X|S). Additionally, Ubisoft confirmed that “multiple” Assassin’s Creed games will join the Free Play Days promotion on Xbox, with players able to jump into select older titles, including Unity, for free April 2-6.

Assassin’s Creed Netflix series

In addition to the new Assassin’s Creed games, Ubisoft has a live-action Assassin’s Creed TV show in the works at Netflix. Guesdon said fans can expect updates “very soon.” He said, “We can’t wait for you to discover more. Something tells us you won’t have to wait very long.”

The Netflix show was announced back in 2020, at which time Ubisoft also stated that it was making a brand-new Assassin’s Creed game for Netflix Games. We still don’t know anything about that, however, and Guesdon’s update today did not include any information.

Major changes at Ubisoft lately

This update on the Assassin’s Creed series comes not long after Ubisoft underwent significant changes, due in part to its partnership with Tencent. As part of the restructuring, Ubisoft created a new subsidiary funded in part by Tencent called Vantage Studios, and established a new “Creative House” setup to oversee Ubisoft’s top franchises.

The changes also included pain for the people who work there, as Ubisoft enacted a massive cost-cutting program that led to layoffs, game cancellations, and studio closures. Also, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot installed his own son, Charlie Guillemot, as the co-CEO of Vantage, prompting nepotism concerns. Ubisoft workers have also taken to the streets to protest Ubisoft’s management, and there have been calls for Yves Guillemot to resign.
