It has been dubbed by many as the worst-kept secret in the industry, but gamers can now finally say that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is officially happening. The hotly anticipated remake is set to give a fan-favorite Assassin’s Creed entry a fresh coat of paint, but it also has a lot of weight to carry on its shoulders. This remake marks a major moment for not just the Assassin’s Creed franchise, but for Ubisoft in general. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is far from the first game to be seen as a make-it or-break-it moment for a major AAA developer. However, the hype and skepticism that have been circling the remake demonstrates just how much the launch has riding on it.
We are only three months into 2026, and Ubisoft has already seen plenty of shake-ups this year. In January, the Prince of Persia remake was canceled alongside five other games, which caused the Ubisoft stock price to plummet. With this news of cancellations also came rumors that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced had been delayed. There were expectations and speculation that the remake would launch before the end of March this year, and while recent information has made it clear that that’s probably not happening, Assassin’s Creed fans finally have the reassurance that this remake at least exists. However, its existence is both a point of excitement and fear, as Ubisoft’s struggles puts the remake in a position where it basically has to succeed.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Will Set the Tone For Ubisoft’s Future
It’s been a rough few years for Ubisoft. Assassin’s Creed is far from the only iconic series the company has been in charge of. Far Cry, Rainbow Six, and Watch Dogs have been some of the company’s most notable heavy-hitters, but Assassin’s Creed reigns supreme as Ubisoft’s most financially successful franchise.

The company has faced plenty of highs and lows over the years, but 2024 really stood out as a hard year for the industry juggernaut. After being in development for over a decade, Skull and Bones failed to meet expectations early in the year. That wasn’t the only game that launched to less-than-desirable feedback, though. August would bring forth Star Wars Outlaws, and it was met with heavily-mixed reviews from both critics and players. Granted, both games have improved with post-launch updates and patches, but the two titles are still viewed unfavorably and have been reduced to memes in some corners of the internet. The canceled Ubisoft games seemed to signal the company’s desire to go back to the drawing board, and naturally, another Skull and Bones or Star Wars Outlaws situation would be really bad news, especially if that game happened to be Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. If what seems like a surefire success for Ubisoft doesn’t work, then there’s no telling what could happen, as it could very well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Has to Meet Increasingly High Expectations
This entry is hailed by many fans as the best Assassin’s Creed game. That’s obviously subjective, but there are a lot of longtime Assassin’s Creed players eyeing this project. Even if Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is good, though, that might not be enough. This remake may have to go above and beyond simply being good if it really wants to kick new life into Ubisoft, as game cancellations aren’t the only thing that has shaken the company this year. Ubisoft recently announced a big change in Assassin’s Creed leadership, and it could be the key to getting the Black Flag remake across the finish line successfully, or raise doubts about whether this adjustment was for the best.
Rumors have claimed that Black Flag Resynced could get rid of the modern-day scenes. This should be taken with a grain of salt, but it would definitely be a controversial decision.
The Assassin’s Creed Franchise’s New Leadership is a Promising Sign of Things to Come
After leading the Assassin’s Creed franchise for over a decade, Marc-Alexis Côté parted ways with Ubisoft back in October 2025. It doesn’t seem like it was an amicable split, either. In January of this year, it was reported that Marc-Alexis Côté was suing Ubisoft. After his exit, the big question was who would take over the Assassin’s Creed brand. Ubisoft finally gave its answer last month.
At the end of February, Ubisoft announced the three company figures who would be the new Assassin’s Creed franchise leaders. This trio has a long history with the company. The most important detail of all, though, is that they all have extensive experience working on the original Black Flag game.
A Brief Summary of Ubisoft’s New Assassin’s Creed Franchise Leaders
- Martin Schelling – Producer for Black Flag, Origins, Revelations, Valhalla
- Jean Guesdon – Creative Director of Black Flag and Origins
- François de Billy – Production Director for Black Flag, Origins, and Valhalla
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this trio’s resumes. They’re definitely the main points worth highlighting, though. These three have plenty of experience with the franchise, so they know what makes an Assassin’s Creed game work. The fact that they were all part of Black Flag‘s development is the most promising sign of all. Jean Guesdon is especially intriguing, since he was the Creative Director. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where a Creative Director of a game would allow a remake to ship that didn’t honor the original well. Black Flag Resynced‘s launch is going to be a huge news story, whether it goes according to plan or not. This team is likely well aware of that. Taking over the franchise as Black Flag Resynced remains one of the most wished-for remakes is a hefty responsibility, but their credentials hold a lot of promise.
Despite a Rocky Few Years, Ubisoft Still Has A Lot to Celebrate
Assassin’s Creed Shadows may have endured its share of controversy, but it was one of the best-selling games of 2025. Beyond that, there are other intriguing Assassin’s Creed projects in the works that aren’t Black Flag Resynced. For example, more Assassin’s Creed Hexe leaks have hit the internet. The next new mainline series entry is expected to be set during the 16th Holy Roman Empire witch trials, marking a horror-tinged turn that sounds compelling. There are also two Far Cry games reportedly in the works and several other Assassin’s Creed projects. Black Flag Resynced is surely going to be a really important launch for Ubisoft, but the company still has a lot of important projects to keep an eye on. For Assassin’s Creed fans curious about the future, though, all eyes are going to be on Black Flag Resynced when it finally releases.
