Just hours after the game was released worldwide, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced became the Assassin’s Creed franchise’s most-played entry on Steam. In short, the peak Steam player count of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced was several times more than Black Flag‘s original release 13 years prior.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is an enhanced remaster of the 2013 title Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. Set in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy, players assume the role of pirate captain Edward Kenway as he gets embroiled in the conflict between the Templars and the Assassins. Reviews of Black Flag Resynced have been mostly positive, with the updated graphics and various quality-of-life updates being the biggest changes that set Ubisoft’s new title apart from the original 2013 version.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is Already a Huge Hit on Steam
Although Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is now available on multiple platforms, the Steam port has already set a major Assassin’s Creed series record. The peak player count for the Steam version of Black Flag Resynced stood at 99,451 shortly after the game was available, though the count has since fallen below 77,000 players. Black Flag Resynced broke the previous Assassin’s Creed franchise Steam player count record set by Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which peaked at 64,825 players during its early 2025 launch. Furthermore, Black Flag Resynced‘s peak Steam player count eclipsed the original 2013 version of Black Flag six times over.
Additionally, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is Steam Deck Verified, meaning that players can take their seafaring experiences on the go. This means that Black Flag Resynced is also confirmed to work on the Steam Machine by default. Despite utilizing Ubisoft’s Anvil Engine, the recommended PC specs for Black Flag Resynced stated that the game should run on older graphics cards like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060. However, Ubisoft stated that a solid-state drive (SSD) is required.
Despite the high initial player count, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced currently holds a mixed Steam rating of 67% across 949 English reviews as of this writing. The mixed rating is likely due to the fact that Black Flag Resynced uses the controversial Denuvo anti-tamper DRM on PC alongside the Ubisoft Launcher. Additionally, Black Flag Resynced has nearly $85 worth of downloadable content outside the standard edition. However, most of Black Flag Resynced’s DLC packs are cosmetic character and ship skins that currently cost $9.99 each.
The mixed reception to Black Flag Resynced may also be due to some technical issues that players may experience. Ubisoft stated on the game’s Steam page that Black Flag Resynced has a known issue where cutscenes are locked to 30 frames per second (FPS) if specific graphical settings are set to Ultra High. The development team offered a temporary workaround and said that a proper fix would be deployed in the coming days. Although Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced offers plentiful side content for players to engage with, it remains to be seen how many Steam players will keep playing after the launch window.
