Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced May Not Truly Be Playable Offline

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced May Not Truly Be Playable Offline

Despite having an offline mode, a weekend outage of Ubisoft Connect left many Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced players unable to access or play the game on PC. The debate surrounding games, especially single-player titles, requiring online connections continues to be a hot button issue. Unfortunately for Ubisoft, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has reignited frustrations.

Ubisoft is no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to games requiring some sort of online connection in order to check. In fact, the recent Stop Killing Games movement largely started after the popular open world racing title The Crew was shut down and delisted from stores after the arrival of the sequel. While there are plenty of solo games available, debate continues over what the term actually means in the traditional sense, as many single-player experiences still require players to be online or to sign in to an account before playing. For those who thought the recent launch of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a port of a game from 2013, would truly be an offline experience, a recent outage proved otherwise.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced players trying to beat the Legendary Ships should keep one old trick in mind.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced PC Port Requires an Online Connection

In just a few short days, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has already proven to be a major hit for Ubisoft. Essentially a remake of the beloved 2013 game, Resynced has been rebuilt inside the Anvil Engine, giving the game an impressive visual overhaul with reworked parkour, combat, and stealth systems, as well as adding in a bit of new content to help round out the experience. Similar to other modern Ubisoft titles, the game is fully integrated with Ubisoft Connect, a service which pulls in double duty for PC players as it acts as both a DRM layer in addition to offering its standard features.

While players are expected to connect “one-time” to the internet in order to authenticate the game through Ubisoft Connect, things took a turn for the worse over the first weekend after the game’s launch. While Ubisoft Connect does have an offline mode, the track record of it working can be hit or miss, which is largely what happened this past weekend when the servers suddenly went offline. Instead of allowing players to remain in-game, the hour-long outage prevented players from accessing the game at all, rendering it unplayable on PC. Naturally, the incident sparked a surge of frustrated posts online and even produced a review bombing on Steam, which has since been reversed back to normal. It’s unknown if this was simply a technical hiccup or how the game is actually intended for PC players, as at the time of publication, Ubisoft has yet to address the incident.

While Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has been well received by critics and fans alike, it hasn’t been without controversy in the short time it has been available. At launch, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced had $85 in microtransactions available for purchase, ranging from a variety of cosmetics for characters, the Jackdaw ship, and more. Naturally, fans were upset about the paywall, pushing Ubisoft to issue a response confirming they’re just optional extra content.

For those who don’t want to drop any extra additional money, there are some extras that can be downloaded to Black Flag Resynced completely for free. As a thank you to the community, Ubisoft is giving away Crimson Storm sails for the Jackdaw, 1500 Animus Keys that can be spent in the in-game Exchange store, as well as a monkey that can be added as shipmate companion while riding around the open ocean in the Jackdaw.
