Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Shows Off Improved Shipboarding Gameplay

Ubisoft shared a preview of the returning ship boarding mechanic in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, complete with some improvements made from the original release. Additionally, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced players will have a new reward option to consider after meeting the requirements to board an enemy ship.

One of the original selling points of the original Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag was the game’s naval combat systems. As Edward Kenway and his crew pillaged Black Flag‘s world map, enemy vessels could sometimes appear for a naval battle. After disabling an enemy ship, players could either sink it to claim some of the loot, or board it for a chance at some extra plunder by forcing the crew to surrender or eliminating them. While boarding ships will be possible in Black Flag Resynced, Ubisoft made some quality-of-life changes that players may notice right away.

Boarding a Ship is Better Than Ever in Black Flag Resynced

With the July 9 release date for Black Flag Resynced drawing closer, Ubisoft shared a video preview of how the game’s ship boarding combat has changed from the original launch. After making the choice to pillage a ship, a boarding battle will ensue. While Kenway was able to climb up the mast of the Jackdaw to board an enemy vessel in the original version, this feat often required careful platforming, horizontal rope swinging, or some overhead assassinations to consistently pull off. In Black Flag Resynced, one of the game’s new features includes vertical rope-swinging from the top of the Jackdaw to the rear of another ship.

While in midair, Kenway can assassinate an enemy target before landing by pressing the Triangle or Y button on a PlayStation or Xbox controller, respectively. Additionally, players can also quickly draw their swords and trip up enemies before they have time to react. However, since enemies in Black Flag Resynced will adapt their tactics, players must stay on their toes when taking on a large enemy crew. Additionally, players who successfully pillage a large vessel, such as a Man O’ War or a frigate, will have a new option to take the Captain’s Lockbox. While players can still repair the Jackdaw, add new ships to their fleet, or lower their wanted levels after boarding a ship, taking the Captain’s Lockbox will provide some additional currency to their coffers.

However, given that Black Flag Resynced is still a work-in-progress, Ubisoft stated that some gameplay elements may still change before July 9. As of this writing, early previews of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced have been generally favorable across social media. Some of the previews pointed out that Black Flag Resynced has stayed true to the spirit of the original game, while refining the graphics and gameplay to modern standards. Although Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will omit the Abstergo segments, players can expect plenty of stealth-based challenges and seafaring escapades.

Although Black Flag Resynced has drawn some controversy for its hunting and whaling mechanics, Ubisoft has largely stuck to its guns by including those features in the upcoming remake. It remains to be seen what other changes await players.
