Assassin’s Creed Hexe Has Lost Another Game Director

Assassin’s Creed Hexe Has Lost Another Game Director

Just weeks after a major leadership team shakeup for the franchise, Assassin’s Creed Hexe loses its second game director as Benoit Richer departs Ubisoft entirely. The Assassin’s Creed franchise has been on fire lately, with real momentum gained through the launch and continued success of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, though fans are curious to know more about the previously announced and teased games like the mysterious Codename Hexe.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has been experiencing a lot of success lately, with the continued positive impact of Shadows and the upcoming launch of Black Flag Resynced in July. While heavily rumored, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced isn’t just a simple port of the original 2013 title, but a remake that makes a bunch of huge overhauls to the experience. Resynced uses the latest version of the Anvil Engine, giving the game a modern look and feel, new content has been added, and other rough spots have been completely smoothed out for a much better overall experience. While there’s seemingly a lot for Assassin’s Creed fans to look forward to in the near term, the long-term future of the franchise appears to be going through its own rough patch.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe Leaks Release Plans and Surprise Returning Character

An insider leaks several new details about Assassin’s Creed Hexe, including its alleged release window and the return of a fan-favorite character.

Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe Loses its Second Game Director

According to his LinkedIn Profile, veteran developer Benoit Richer has left Ubisoft and his role as game director of Assassin’s Creed: Project Hexe. Reasons for his departure were not provided, as Richer simply posted that it is the beginning of a new chapter for him, joining the indie studio known as Servo Games as game director. Based in Montreal, Servo is made up of a number of industry veterans, including a number of former Ubisoft Montreal employees like Alex Drouin, Luc Tremblay, and Dany Marcoux. What the team is working on isn’t yet known, as the website’s Projects page is currently blank with only a “Coming Soon” message to greet viewers.

While this is no doubt a blow to the Assassin’s Creed franchise, it isn’t the first time a series of Ubisoft veterans have departed the studio to venture out on their own. One of the more higher profile success stories is Sandfall Interactive, an independent studio founded by former Ubisoft employees Guillaume Broche and Tom Guillermin, alongside their friend François Meurisse. Fast-forward years later and Sandfall would go on to release the 2025 success story Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

In terms of Codename Hexe, a lot has changed for the game since it’s tease in 2022. Following its confirmation, fans began dechypering any and all promotional materials to try and learn more about the game, with many believing Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hex takes place during the time of the Holy Roman Empire in Germany, focusing on witch trials, the supernatural, persecution, and potentially involving major historical figures like Emperor Charlemagne.

While there’s still a lot that players don’t know about the game, Ubisoft did provide a small update to Codename Hexe back in February. Unfortunately, longtime Ubisoft veteran Clint Hocking left the company and his role as creative director, with Assassin’s Creed boss Jean Guesdon taking over the role. Guesdon was also part of a larger shakeup for the franchise, with Martin Schelling now leading the franchise team and François De Billy becoming head of production excellence. All three have extensive experience with the Assassin’s Creed franchise, so things appear to be in good hands. However, things could be changing as rumor suggest that the magical elements of Codename Hexe could be getting axed completely.
