Baldur’s Gate 3 Player Loses 60-Hour Honour Mode Run In The Worst Way Possible

Baldur’s Gate 3 Player Loses 60-Hour Honour Mode Run In The Worst Way Possible

This article contains spoilers for Act Three of Baldur’s Gate 3.A Baldur’s Gate 3 player online has made the common mistake of trying out something new in Honour Mode, only to lose their run 60 hours into it in the most heartbreaking way possible. After getting all the way to Act Three of Baldur’s Gate 3, curiosity got the better of them, leading to the end of their run.

Honour Mode is Baldur’s Gate 3‘s biggest challenge. Players only have one save file, so it’s impossible to save scum by reloading the game when things aren’t looking good. If the entire party gets wiped out during combat, then the run is over. The base difficulty is much higher across the board, and bosses now have legendary actions, making this challenge not for the weak. If a run comes to a close, players are able to continue their save file, but it will no longer be considered an Honour Mode run.

New Official Baldur’s Gate 3 Project Brings Beloved Character Back

It’s official: a beloved Baldur’s Gate 3 character is returning in a new upcoming project.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Player Loses Honour Mode Run to Haarlep

Over on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit, user theyfieri shared a post with their heartbreaking Honour Mode experience. According to the player, curiosity got the better of them when encountering Haarlep in the House of Hope. This character is an incubus who players can sleep with in exchange for valuable information about Raphael. During the encounter, players can surrender their body and soul to Haarlep as the final choice, which results in a game over screen as the protagonist dies. That’s exactly what theyfieri did, killing their character and ending their Honour Mode run 60 hours in, heartbreakingly close to the end of the game.

Few in the thread had much sympathy for the player, with many querying why they decided to try something new in Honour Mode. It’s almost an unwritten rule for players to only follow tried-and-tested paths in Honour Mode, as Baldur’s Gate 3 features so many encounters that can result in random death or difficult combat when the wrong choice is picked. According to the player, they “assumed that was the correct dialogue option for that outcome.” It’s safe to say they were incorrect.

Since Honour Mode was added to Baldur’s Gate 3, there has been no shortage of players sharing their heartbreaking deaths that end their runs. One BG3 player even lost their Honour Mode playthrough to a painting, which is pretty bizarre. It’s a good reminder of how brutal the game can be at times – even when played perfectly across 60 hours, one single incorrect dialogue choice can end it all.

It’s no secret at this point that Larian Studios will not be returning to work on the next Baldur’s Gate game. The developer is instead working on its next CRPG, Divinity, its own IP once again. Some developers have already said no to working on Baldur’s Gate 4, and it remains to be seen what studio eventually takes on the task, especially given what will be sky-high expectations on any new game in the series.
