Beast of Reincarnation Director Promises Improvements After Apologizing For Rocky Launch

Director Kota Furushima has apologized for Beast of Reincarnation‘s shortcomings while promising that Game Freak will continue polishing the game in future updates. Beast of Reincarnation launched on August 4, 2026, for consoles and PC and was a day-one addition to Xbox Game Pass, representing an ambitious new project for Game Freak outside the Pokemon franchise.

Set in post-apocalyptic Japan in the year 4026, Beast of Reincarnation follows Emma and her canine companion Koo as they travel across the country, battling Blight-infested monsters and corrupted machines. Combat combines Emma’s real-time swordplay with command-based abilities for Koo, making cooperation between the two central to both the story and gameplay. Unfortunately, Beast of Reincarnation‘s reception has been divided since launch, with 62% of its 1,239 user reviews currently positive on Steam, resulting in a “Mixed” rating on the platform.

Beast of Reincarnation Review

Beast of Reincarnation is an intriguing detour for Pokemon developer Game Freak, but it sadly doesn’t live up to expectations.

Beast of Reincarnation Director Apologizes and Promises Major Improvements

Speaking with 4Gamer about the response to Beast of Reincarnation, game director Kota Furushima acknowledged that portions of the game still need a lot of attention and Game Freak is on the case. The director thanked those currently playing before apologizing for areas that have prevented some users from enjoying the game as comfortably as intended, adding that the team plans to “firmly improve” those portions. Furushima said the development team is taking player feedback seriously and will continue addressing problems as post-launch support continues. Furushima was also much more positive about other areas, noting that Game Freak has received an encouraging response from fans regarding Koo’s combat mechanics and how fans enjoy the distinctive atmosphere of its post-apocalyptic Japan.

Game Freak is already acting on some of the criticism through Beast of Reincarnation‘s post-launch updates. The recently released Version 1.0.7 adjusts the camera, increases text sizes, changes cutscene playback behavior, rebalances bosses across every difficulty, and includes several bug and usability fixes. Game Freak has also stated that it plans to address the highly criticized narrative pacing in future patches, as that has been a primary complaint about the game alongside general technical issues. Later updates will also add ultrawide monitor support, DLSS 4.5 and FSR4 compatibility, subtitle-size options, and further camera improvements.

The quick response is encouraging for Game Freak’s new IP, especially as it continues drawing in players through Xbox Game Pass. A “Mixed” Steam rating is hardly an ideal opening, particularly when some complaints involve basic usability and gameplay concerns such as camera behavior, readability, and responsiveness. Luckily, many of those shortcomings are the kind that can realistically be addressed through early patches rather than requiring Beast of Reincarnation‘s core design to be rebuilt. Complaints regarding the game’s narrative, combat, and enemy variety, however, could be a different story.

Furushima’s comments also suggest that Game Freak remains confident in the central ideas behind Emma and Koo’s adventure. The director explained that the game’s difficulty was intentionally designed around players relying on Koo, since allowing Emma to easily overcome every situation alone would undermine its “one-person, one-dog” concept. The upcoming updates consequently appear focused on polishing the existing experience rather than fundamentally reworking that central design and overhauling major portions of the game this early on. Beast of Reincarnation may have endured a rocky launch, but its growing list of completed and planned changes could give the action RPG an opportunity to win over players who remain unconvinced.
