Zombies mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops can now be played for free via a supported web browser, though the port has some caveats for players to consider. The browser adaptation of Call of Duty: Black Ops went viral just months after the game was ported to PS4 and PS5 consoles.
Browser games have been a mainstay of Internet culture for nearly three decades, starting with games that utilized technologies such as Macromedia Shockwave. In the early 2000s, Flash became the primary way that browser games could be accessed and played by users across the globe. Flash was also utilized by YouTube during the site’s early days. Given that Flash has been discontinued for mainstream use outside of China, modern browser FPS titles such as Counter-Strike Online Club utilize different web browser technologies.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies is Now a Browser Game
Now, the first entry in Activision’s long-running series has become the latest game that can be freely played in an up-to-date web browser. Zombie mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops is now available via this link. Although the browser port does not support playing Black Ops in multiplayer mode, an option called “Hell Mode” can be used to take players directly to the last floor of a map. The Zombies maps that are supported include fan-favorites such as Ascension, Moon, and Shangri-La. Though the browser version also includes all DLC released for Zombies mode, it also comes with a few conditions that users should bear in mind.

In a video released on October 8, content creator MrTLexify said that the browser port of Call of Duty: Black Ops was created entirely via Claude, an AI-assisted development tool created by Anthropic. In short, the game was reverse engineered via Claude Code, which is a process that would take much longer for human developers to pull off. Though titles such as Roblox have allowed users to create their own games using AI text prompts, the technology remains a controversial subject. Additionally, the browser version of Black Ops Zombies occasionally lags and experiences lower frame rates compared to the official release. Users can remedy some of these issues by turning on hardware acceleration within their browser’s settings. MrTLexify also warned that the Claude-powered game could be taken down by Microsoft or Activision at any point, since it is not an official release.
In July 2026, Activision surprised fans by shadow dropping Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 on PS4 and PS5 consoles, making the games available on Sony’s current-gen systems for the first time since the PS3 era. Although Black Ops 1 and 2 were warmly received by PlayStation fans, some features were notably missing from the games at launch, such as matchmaking between PlayStation Network (PSN) users across different console generations. The development team responded by releasing cross-play between PS5 and PS4 users, including matchmaking between users with the Season Pass and non-Season Pass users within the PSN ecosystem.
As for the Call of Duty franchise, Activision is preparing to launch Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Friday, October 23. Given that the FPS genre has multiple titles releasing throughout October, it remains to be seen how many players Modern Warfare 4 will draw in.
