It’s the 10th anniversary of Overwatch, and unfortunately, it hasn’t been well-received by fans, prompting the game director to comment on how Blizzard will fix things in the coming weeks. The past few days have seen a rise in fan disapproval as Overwatch‘s 10th-anniversary event has been marred by disappointing rewards and a lack of content.
Overall, Overwatch has been on quite a resurgence this year, ever since it dropped the sequel moniker and Season 1 launched to an enthusiastic fan base. Unfortunately, Overwatch can’t go very long without some form of controversy, as the recent 10th-anniversary event has soured a huge number of fans over the past week. The foremost complaints from fans online include that the “Launch Hero Skins” are nothing more than simple recolors not worthy of any hype, and that there are only 15 anniversary loot boxes, with 5 of them containing legendary skins. On top of that, this event features no opportunities to earn Overwatch‘s gold shards, mythic skins, or mythic shards.
Overwatch Might Reveal Its Next Hero During an Unexpected Event
With Overwatch Reign of Talon Season 3 on the horizon, a new hero reveal is coming soon – but it may not happen where one expects it to.
Overwatch Director Promises Changes for the 10th Anniversary Event
The pushback from fans has been significant enough that Overwatch‘s game director, Aaron Keller, has taken to social media to address the controversy and detail how Blizzard intends to make things right with fans. On Twitter, Aaron Keller has stated that the criticisms leveled against Overwatch‘s 10th-anniversary event are fair, and that rewards should be more than just lootboxes. As a fix, Blizzard will be doubling the amount of community loot boxes in Week 2 and then tripling them in Week 3, while also lowering the number of games needed to earn all the loot boxes down to 60.

Additionally, during Week 3, fans can expect to receive a 10-Year Anniversary Loot Box that guarantees 4 legendary skins, granting fans 10 legendary skins total for playing during the event. Looking to the future, Keller states that Blizzard has more coming to Overwatch later in the year and that the team is looking at the year as a whole, potentially hinting at bigger and better rewards coming down the line. However, it seems like a good portion of Overwatch fans feel like this is still not enough.
Chinese fans of Overwatch have been treated to a much different 10th-anniversary event, including a log-in bonus that rewards players with Mythic Shards, and they can even earn up to 10 Mythic Skins as a log-in bonus as well. Needless to say, fans of Overwatch from around the world feel they are missing out on a much better event and question why the current event can’t be the same as the one in China. What’s more, when compared to how Marvel Rivals handled its first anniversary, with a new mode and plenty of skins and currency rewards, Overwatch fans feel like this is all still very weak for a decade celebration.

However, Overwatch can always steer the ship in the right direction. Blizzard has proven time and again that, despite controversy and various setbacks, the game can always bounce back from the player-count trenches, and it wouldn’t have lasted a decade without knowing when to pivot. It can just be frustrating that a well-intentioned Overwatch 10th-anniversary event had to be so disappointing when it should have been a cause for community celebration.
