Blood of Dawnwalker Dev is Staying Quiet on Romance, and That’s Doubly Exciting

Everybody loves a good romance story in a video game, but it seems like the devs of The Blood of Dawnwalker want to say absolutely nothing about how romance works in their upcoming vampire RPG, and that’s exciting. By deliberately obscuring information about how romance works in The Blood of Dawnwalker, fans are now well positioned to dive into this game in ways that seem harder to come by these days.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is an upcoming open-world RPG set in the 14th century, where players get to fill the shoes of Coen, a half-man, half-vampire protagonist who has 30 days to save his family from a vampire lord. Polish studio Rebel Wolves is behind the project, and fans might be interested to find that the studio is composed of former CD Projekt Red developers, a team well known for its romance storylines. Much like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Rebel Wolves’ debut title promises to be a sprawling RPG with a strong focus on how players develop their relationships with other characters with the choices they make throughout the story. It is clearly an ambitious game, as the dev team states that The Blood of Dawnwalker is so huge that it will take longer to beat than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077.

How Blood of Dawnwalker Places a Premium on Player Agency in its Quest Design

Blood of Dawnwalker’s writer and lead quest designer share how the game aims to place player agency at the forefront of its branching questlines.

Rebel Wolves Refuses to Talk about Romance in the Blood of Dawnwalker

Despite recently amping up the marketing with all things The Blood of Dawnwalker, it seems like Rebel Wolves refuses to talk about the romance options and how romance works in the upcoming RPG. In an interview with Game Informer, developer Konrad Tomaszkiewicz delved into how The Blood of Dawnwalker handles relationships, detailing how characters remember Coen’s interactions with them outside of dialogue and how the “infamy” system tracks player actions, with the world reacting accordingly. The game appears to take a much more complex approach to player choice and its effects on relationships, factoring in not only how Coen talks to other characters but also how he behaves in the world.

Rebel Wolves have stated that the game even tracks choices at a more granular level, leading to NPCs who might remember a minor detail that could be a huge factor in how someone likes Coen later. However, when the topic of romance came up, Tomaszkiewicz stated, “We have a rule that we are not speaking about romances…you will see it after we release the game,” and left it at that. Given what Rebel Wolves has said about how relationships work in The Blood of Dawnwalker, it seems like this could be a very complex character interaction system that fans are going to have to really dive into. The best part is, fans don’t even really know much about it.

Tomaszkiewicz’s statement on romance might leave some fans wanting more, but that is exactly what makes The Blood of Dawnwalker so exciting. Often, it seems like many video games aim to show players every last feature and how each one works before they are even released, leaving little for players to discover. That sense of discovery and wonderment that fans often say they felt in older games can feel like it has been effectively wiped out in modern games by so much marketing that tells fans exactly what they are buying for $70. The Blood of Dawnwalker seems to be breaking the mold by just not saying anything and letting the player figure it out for themselves.

How player choices, the “infamy” system, and general gameplay interactions affect romance options in The Blood of Dawnwalker, or how the romance system even works in the first place, is up for the player to discover when the game releases, and it is all the better for it. Rebel Wolves has shared a lot about The Blood of Dawnwalker lately, and likely has more to share soon, so RPG fans beware, this might be a big game, and there might be a lot to do in it. With time to manage, a mountain of choices to make throughout the story, and a complex relationship system coming to The Blood of Dawnwalker, there will be plenty to keep fans of the vampire occult busy in September.
