A premature product listing suggests Borderlands 4 is finally coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on February 27. Despite being one of the first third-party titles confirmed for the Switch 2, Gearbox’s looter shooter has yet to land on the platform, but that wait could be ending soon. There’s still plenty of speculation about how Borderlands 4 will run on the console, but fans could find out for themselves before long.
Things haven’t gone entirely smoothly for Borderlands 4. The game faced plenty of controversy leading up to its release, and peristent performance issues plagued it post-launch. Since then, though, Gearbox has released several updates and patches, and Borderlands 4‘s updated roadmap for 2026 paints a promising picture of what’s ahead, which hopefully bodes well for the game’s upcoming Switch 2 release. That version may also arrive sooner than some expected.
Borderlands 4 Has Bad News for Switch 2 Owners
An announcement from developer Gearbox Studios regarding Borderlands 4 may be disappointing for players looking to buy the game for Switch 2.
Borderlands 4’s Switch 2 Version May Come Out in February 2026
As spotted by venom_daemon on Reddit, Portuguese retailer GamingReplay listed Borderlands 4 for Switch 2, revealing that the game will come to Nintendo consoles on February 27, 2026. The port was originally supposed to come out on October 3 of last year before Gearbox announced an indefinite delay for Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 in September 2025. At that time, the studio said the delay was to give devs extra time to polish the game and ensure it gives fans “the best possible experience.”
While the reveal may be exciting for some, others are anxious to see how the Switch 2 port will perform. Many Redditors replying to venom_daemon’s post questioned how the game could run on the Switch 2’s less powerful hardware when it’s had such prominent issues on high-end PC specs. Notably, Borderlands 4′s 24-hour Steam player peak dropped 93% in just two months, the biggest such decline of any mainline Borderlands game. That steep drop is possibly due to the game’s frame rate and crashing problems on PC. It may be worth noting that most of these challenges showed up on PC, less so on consoles, but the Switch 2’s specs are far below those of the Xbox Series X or PS5, so it’s easy to see where the concerns start to creep in.
The GamingReplay listing also confirms that Borderlands 4 will be a game-key card title on Switch 2. That may be expected given the game’s size, but this format, where Switch 2 cartridges only contain a download code instead of actual game files, has proven controversial. Many fans cite ownership concerns when even “physical” media relies on digital copies of the game. However, some feel differently, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth‘s director calling Switch 2 game-key cards an “amazing idea” because of how they make it easier for devs to provide high-end experiences on the console’s modest specs. Game-key cards’ faster loading could help Borderlands 4 run better on the Switch 2, but it’s difficult to say anything firm about its performance until the port releases.
While questions remain, the Switch 2 port could help Gearbox regain some sales after Borderlands 4 failed to meet launch expectations on other platforms. If the February 27 date is correct, a proper announcement could come soon, and fans will be able to see if devs were able to optimize the game as necessary for themselves.
